As we told you, Gucci unveiled its brand new campaign for the Chinese New Year, celebrating the Year of the Tiger. But the latter has been in turmoil since the World Animal Protection U.S. asked it to no longer use wild animals in its campaigns.

The World Animal Protection U.S. has alerted Gucci to its concerns about using wild animals, including the tiger, in its latest Gucci Tiger campaign. In the video campaign directed by Angelo Pennetta, real tigers invite themselves for tea time at a luxurious retro-style hotel, mingling with a group of friends enjoying treats and a cup of tea.

Gucci is sending the wrong message by promoting tigers as pets and luxury items, when they are wild animals that belong in their natural habitat. World Animal Protection urges Gucci to stop using wild animals in its campaigns and declare that tigers belong in the wild. The Year of the Tiger should raise awareness that these incredible animals need to be conserved, not commodified. Tigers living in captivity in the United States outnumber the 3,900 tigers remaining in the wild. Tigers are under serious threat from use as “pets”, tourism exploitation, breeding for traditional medicine, poaching, habitat destruction and the climate crisis. Whether bred in captivity or captured in the wild, the stress these tigers face when forced to pose for photographs is immense. Gucci’s fashion campaign treats tigers as mere props and encourages consumers to do the same,” said Liz Cabrera. said Liz Cabrera Holtz, Wildlife Campaigner for World Animal Protection U.S.

Gucci‘s House reacted strongly to the statements made by World Animal Protection U.S. stating, “Nature, wildlife and its inhabitants are particularly important to Gucci, which as of 2018 is fully carbon neutral across its entire supply chain. In February 2020, Gucci joined the Lion’s Share Fund, a unique initiative to raise much-needed funds to protect endangered species and their natural habitats. Gucci’s continued support and contributions are helping to achieve tangible results on the ground for this urgent cause.

A third-party animal welfare organisation, American Humane, monitored the set where animals were present and verified that no animals were harmed. The tigers were filmed in a separate safe environment, in accordance with Gucci’s policy, and then presented as part of the campaign” , added Gucci.

Lindsay Oliver, Executive Director of World Animal Protection U.S. said of the campaign, “There is really no humane way to do a photo shoot with a tiger in captivity, or a wild animal in captivity for that matter. There’s a lot of control and manipulation of these animals. It’s very stressful, it’s cruel and it’s usually a dangerous situation as well. He added that the location of this campaign was not a suitable environment for wild animals.

At this time, Gucci has not stated a decision on the comments of World Animal Protection U.S. regarding its latest Gucci Tiger campaign.
