With SightGlass Vision, EssilorLuxottica accelerates its fight against myopia

EssilorLuxottica and Cooper Companies have completed their joint venture with SightGlass Vision with the common goal of driving the commercialisation of innovative myopia control technologies.

EssilorLuxottica and ophthalmic medical device company Cooper Companies have announced the completion of their joint venture agreement for SightGlass Vision. This collaboration between two optical giants will accelerate the introduction of innovative ophthalmic lens technologies and grow the category of myopia control solutions.

As a global player in the industry, we have more than 30 years of myopia research under our belt and have been developing the myopia control solutions category for over 10 years. As such, we are very excited to see our joint venture with Cooper Companies become operational and that SightGlass Vision can begin to launch its business by bringing its first products to market. Together with eye care professionals, we will be able to increase public awareness of existing solutions and facilitate access to these technologies, to help children today and for their future lives,” said Norbert Gorny, Executive Vice President of EssilorLuxottica.

Changing lifestyles have significantly changed people’s vision, leading to an increase in myopia. Today, as many as 2.6 billion people worldwide are affected and it is estimated that by 2050, five billion people will be nearsighted – half the world’s population. Myopia is the leading cause of visual impairment in children and, over time, can contribute to an increased risk of developing permanent visual impairment. SightGlass Vision’s first mission is to slow down this myopia, in this case in children. EssilorLuxottica’s investment will help to demonstrate this desire to fight against eye diseases from an early age.
