From February 7 to 12 in Paris, representatives from 65 countries will compete in a new edition to award the World’s Best Sommelier 2023. An event that brings together the most talented in their field, promising a competition at the top.

Every three years, the International Sommelier Association (ASI) organizes a worldwide competition to award the title of best sommelier in the world. After Antwerp in Belgium in 2019, it is France that gathers in its capital the 2023 edition. From February 7 to 12, 2023, the Pullman Montparnasse Hotel in Paris will host the 68 candidates, including 65 countries represented. The event is organized with the sommelier association of the host country. In this case, for this edition, the Union de la Sommellerie (UDSF), chaired by Philippe Faure-Brac, himself named Best Sommelier of the World in 1992.

The competition evaluates the participants through tests that highlight their abilities and skills, as much on their knowledge of beverages as on their quality of service and their ability to advise and make customers experience emotions. This event is a “special opportunity to celebrate sommellerie”, said Philippe Faure-Brac, at a conference organized in partnership with Luxus+ and Hôtel et Préférences.

A real competition

In addition to the 65 delegations represented, the event also brings together three winners of continental competitions : Valeria Gamper (Americas), Salvatore Castano (Europe-Africa) and Masong Ng (Asia-Oceania). Pascaline Lepeltier, Meilleur Ouvrier de France in the Sommellerie category and Meilleur Sommelier de France, will represent France during this week of competitions.

The competition, which begins today, includes quarter finals on Wednesday, February 8. February 9 will be a rest day, at the end of which only 15 candidates will be left. The semi-finals on February 10 will select the three finalists. The final will take place on February 12 in the Paris La Défense Arena.

The final will be filmed by worldwide television stations and will be open to the public, with a capacity of 4,000 spectators.

February will bring more surprises for wine lovers with the edition of Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023, which will be held from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 February 2023 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. The event is the first major meeting of the global wine and spirits industry in 2023. It will include the presence of high quality speakers, such as Philippe Faure-Brac and other world-renowned chefs Sommeliers.
