Who is Jean-Paul Agon, CEO of L’Oréal and new director of HEC ?

On Thursday, the chairman of L’Oréal, Jean-Paul Agon, was appointed president of the HEC Paris business school. He himself graduated from the school in 1978.

 

A new boss of a major French group is taking over the presidency of a leading business school. After Michel-Edouard Leclerc, CEO of the eponymous retailer, who took over the presidency of Neoma in 2018, the chairman of L’Oréal, Jean-Paul Agon, was elected chairman of the board of directors of HEC on Thursday 7 April, the establishment announced.

 

Jean-Paul Agon began his career at L’Oréal as a representative. He was then given marketing functions within the group. At the age of 25, he became the general manager of L’Oréal Greece. In 1986, he returned to France to take up the position of Managing Director of L’Oréal Paris. In 1994, he was appointed Managing Director of L’Oréal Germany. Drawing on his international experience, he set up the Asia Zone and managed its activities. In 2001, he became Chairman and CEO of L’Oréal USA before being promoted to Deputy CEO of the group four years later, and then CEO a year later. In 2011, he was appointed Chairman and CEO of the Group. Reaching the age limit, he hands over the position of CEO in 2021 to Nicolas Hieronimus and is now Chairman of the group.

 

At HEC, he succeeds Jean-Paul Vermès, CEO of VMS France, and was unanimously elected. The happy appointee “has not ceased to be involved with HEC Paris” since he left the school in 1978, underlines the press release of the school located in Jouy-en-Josas, “both professionally through his functions at L’Oréal, and personally as a major donor to the school“.

Involvement with HEC

 

Since 2006, he has been involved in HEC Paris’ equal opportunities and social inclusion policy and in 2019 even created his own Sheltered Foundation, committing one million euros to support the cause. This commitment is in line with the plans of Eloïc Peyrache, who will be appointed head of the school in January 2021, and who wants to break the image of an establishment reserved for the children of the bourgeoisie. His objective is to welcome 25% of students who receive a grant from the Crous. Bonus points for scholarship students taking the exams for the second time will be introduced from the 2022 exam.

 

Quoted in the press release, he said he was “proud and honoured” to have been chosen. He believes that “taking part in the adventure now is all the more important as business schools are at a turning point: education models are being reinvented and expectations in terms of the environment and social issues are increasingly high“.
