It is in Switzerland, in the commune of Givrins that the Biver family (father and son) unveiled their new brand to professionals and journalists: Biver. Their first model? A minute repeater watch. Zoom in on the striking debut of Wonder Week 2023.

Before becoming a brand, Biver was, and still is, a big name in watchmaking. Jean-Claude Biver is a star in the industry. Formerly President of the watch division of the LVMH group, he then participated in the turnaround of numerous watchmaking companies such as Omega, Hublot and Tag Heuer. As if he had gold in his hands, it is now his turn to design his own brand, accompanied by his last son, Pierre.

Together, they are embarking on a new family adventure, from the design to the naming, which takes their family name. To this end, they rely on the greatest specialists in each field: dials, hands, bracelets, cases… to create exceptional, almost museum-like pieces.

The first part of this family story highlights a jewel of watchmaking that only the greatest craftsmen can master: a carillon minute repeater watch, simply called Carillon Tourbillon BIVER.

Some brands have already adopted this type of watchmaking complication. This requires hundreds of hours of work, to accomplish a meticulous and exceptional task.

Each element, from the dial to the hands, through the movement and the bracelet, tells a part of the history of watchmaking, creating a bridge between the past, the present and the future,” says Biver in a press release.

An adventure that begins with sound

The House of Biver is above all a story of philosophy, time jumping and family. In addition to the name, the two eponymous designers wanted to design the very first collection around three “families”: “Philosophically speaking, our collection will be built around three families: sound, memory and movement. Sound, which is found in a minute repeater, is created by vibration and can be likened to love, to the world of emotions,” says Pierre Biver.

And it is with sound that this story begins. Watchmaking is more than a sector, it is also a vector. A vector of emotions that use three of the five senses: hearing, touch and sight.

And it is with sound, and more precisely with this watchmaking complexity that is the minute repeater that the Biver story takes shape. A return to the roots of the watchmaking world, but also an ambitious choice for father and son.

We wanted the minute repeater to be the cornerstone of the brand,” explains Pierre Biver. “But what we wanted to focus on was a design that we could identify with. We wanted to make sure that the movement would serve the aesthetic codes we had defined. A contemporary watch, inspired by tradition but representing both my father and me“.

But how do you make a mechanism invented in the 18th century contemporary? “In order for collectors to be attracted to new sounds, we added a third hammer, which gives the watch a new and different sound. This requires a very fine adjustment of the tempo, so that the sound is just right” continues Pierre Biver.

The art of watchmaking in all its splendor

For this very first model, the Biver family has gone to great lengths. In addition to a watchmaking complication, this timepiece has been designed down to the smallest detail. The smallest elements, including those invisible to the naked eye, have been decorated by hand. They have been polished, satinized, pearled and flame-blued.

More than just a piece of jewelry to be worn on the wrist, it is a real treasure. The dials are made of stone, from sodalite and silver obsidian: “We chose them for their spiritual attributes, for the waves they give off. Sodalite is soothing and has a protective aspect. Silver obsidian is comforting,” explains Pierre Biver. “It is also a way to reconnect with the energy of the Earth“.

The hands, meanwhile, are made of gold as are the hour markers. The bracelet is also made of gold or titanium. Specially designed for the brand, it is inspired by a five-row bracelet. It was built as an integrated bracelet, when in fact it is interchangeable.

Adopting a watch means being able to wear it every day, under any circumstances. The Biver family has understood this. Despite its preciousness, this minute repeater model is waterproof. It can therefore be worn on land, in the air, and even underwater.

Even though they are very valuable, we want our pieces to be user-friendly and for the collector to be able to enjoy them on a daily basis. The fact that we have chosen to animate it with an automatic movement equipped with a micro-rotor makes this watch very portable in everyday life. Technology must be at the service of our vision, but above all at the service of the customer. The best way to bring a watch to life is to wear it! “underlines Pierre Biver.

A watch built on contradictions, which includes everything and its opposite at the same time: satin and polished, round and linear, darkness and luminosity, past and present, sound and silence.

Its price was also revealed during the launch party. And it is 520 000 euros. A true collector’s item, it is already making collectors and timepiece lovers green with envy.
