Luxury goods group Kering announced earlier this week the appointment of Gianfilippo Testa as chief executive of British luxury fashion house Alexander McQueen. Emmanuel Gintzburger, his predecessor, will join Capri Holdings as CEO of Italian fashion house Versace.
Far from being a coincidence, Testa’s appointment to this position makes sense when you look at his previous experiences. He began his career in 2002 with Kering’s competitor, LVMH, where he held several positions at TAG Heuer and then at Fendi. He then joined the Kering group in 2016 by becoming the president of Gucci Grande China. Evolving in this position, in 2019 he became president of EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) as well as vice president of global retail for Gucci.
“As CEO of Alexander McQueen, Gianfilippo Testa will be tasked with accelerating the development of the British luxury house in order to realise its full potential,” the statement said.
Gianfilippo Testa will take up his position at Alexander McQueen in May 2022.
Emmanuel Gintzburger, Testa’s predecessor, becomes CEO of Versace
Gintzburger was Testa’s predecessor before deciding to leave Kering to join rival group Capri Holdings, which owns Versace. The press release explains that Gintzburger “has decided to leave Kering to take up a new professional challenge outside the group”.
He succeeds Cedric Wilmotte, who has held the position on an interim basis since 17 January, having had to replace Jonathan Akeroyd at short notice.
Gintzburger is a true veteran of the luxury world. With a career spanning nearly 25 years in the industry, he began in 1998 at Louis Vuitton where he was in charge of marketing in Asia-Pacific in Hong Kong. He then moved on to Sephora, Lanvin, Saint Laurent and now, Alexander McQueen.
As an international house, Gintzburger will have to ensure the continuity of the commercial momentum that Versace has started in recent years.
Capri Holdings (Versace’s parent group) CEO John D. Idol was optimistic about the appointment: “He has a proven track record of building global luxury fashion houses. We believe Emmanuel’s vision for Versace will help us achieve our ambitions for the future. Versace already has strong momentum and Emmanuel’s leadership will help us further accelerate our plans and strengthen our strategic initiatives”.
Emmanuel Gintzburger’s arrival in this role will be effective in September 2022.
