Universum 2022 Ranking: luxury is the most attractive employer in France

Young executives aspire to new salary expectations, job security and a balanced life. This is what emerges from the new Universum study on the companies that attract the most young executives.

 

Universum is a group that publishes an annual ranking of the most “attractive” companies for students and professionals. When luxury appears at the top of the ranking for its attractive salaries and for the image it enjoys, other sectors such as the food industry have more difficulty recruiting.

 

Luxury at the top

 

Compared to 2021, in terms of progression, luxury brands and aeronautics are the big winners of this ranking” comments Aurélie Robertet, Director of Universum France-Benelux. With 20% more executives recruited than in 2021, the end of the crisis has been favorable to the major luxury groups, which are particularly popular with business school graduates. LVMH, Hermès and L’Oréal unsurprisingly occupy the top 5 of the ranking, composed of 100 companies, alongside Google and Decathlon. The auditing and consulting sectors are also doing very well.

 

Other companies are gradually recovering from two difficult years linked to the crisis and are attracting executives again, such as Air France and Club Med. They have climbed 6 places compared to 2021, to occupy 8th and 10th place respectively. Engineers remain loyal to the aeronautics sector, and even though the sector plunged during the crisis, it is gaining ground again and is favored by young executives from engineering schools, for whom Airbus, Thales and Dassault Aviation are among their top 5 favorite companies.

 

Attractiveness at half-mast

 

Among the sectors that are struggling to attract young executives is the food industry, a sector that has already been in crisis for several years, yet is trying to attract them. Marketing positions are often shunned: “The product around the food industry is much maligned, while technology is more attractive with its innovative and creative products. In addition, the food industry is not a sector particularly associated with interesting remuneration packages, which remain the main criterion for executives” explains Aurélie Robertet.

 

A sector in difficulty, which would have recruited 10% fewer executives this year compared to 2021. This is also the case for the energy sector, which has been severely affected by the war in Ukraine.

 

Evolution of criteria

 

According to the Universum study, the competitive salary remains, since 2019, the first criterion when choosing a new job. Not far behind are remuneration packages, career prospects as well as the prestige of the company, which count more and more in the balance since 2021. “In a period of recovery, the candidate is in a position of strength and therefore more demanding,” notes Aurélie Robertet.

 

Large groups are the favorites because “they convey an image of stability, a professional reference as well as prestige, which can be valued on a CV” according to Aurélie Robertet. These large groups also provide opportunities for expatriation, careers abroad and development prospects.

 

The study also notes that executives are looking to evolve in a pleasant and flexible environment, allowing them a certain balance in their lives. In the aftermath of the health crisis, which demonstrated that telecommuting was possible in certain cases, many executives are demanding an adapted work environment, a point on which smaller companies are more likely to accede to their request. “SMEs are globally perceived as being more committed, offering more variety of assignments and conveying a better image in terms of life balance. They are attractive for these aspects” says Aurélie Robertet.
