Among the new duos of designers, a trend has emerged in recent seasons: family businesses founded by a mother and her daughter. A look back at the greatest successes of these mother-daughter pairs.

Since 2015, the mother-daughter duo of Rebecca Henry and Akua Shabaka has conquered the West American coast. It is in Los Angeles, California, that the family duo shares its “spiritual expression of the creative mother-daughter duo in the material form”, through unique and colourful pieces for both men and women. Under the name House of Aama, the two women celebrate the beauty and heritage of Africa.

A mother nicknamed Cleo in reference to Cleopatra, for her style reminiscent of the Egyptian queen, and her daughter Marie, are at the origin of the new French brand Maison Cléo. Cleo is a qualified seamstress, while Marie has always been involved in fashion. After three years at Vestiaire Collective, she decided to join forces with her mother and to found a company based on their common passion: fashion. A French know-how accessible to all and respectful of the environment is at the heart of the requirements of these designers who offer only handmade pieces.

The house of Lana by MT, a newcomer on the Belgian slow-fashion market, offers tailor-made and handmade wool sweaters from 275€. Founded in 2017 by Macarena Toro and her daughter Camille, who previously worked for L’Oréal, this family business has been passionate about wool from generation to generation and the grandfather was already working with wool in the 50s in the south of Chile.

In the city of Antwerp, Bernadette’s pretty floral dresses, described by the British Vogue magazine as “flowers that sparkle”, have been all the rage for some time. This flowery duo that dresses the Belgian spring is composed of Charlotte de Geyter, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, and her mother Bernadette, a former buyer for the house Ralph Lauren.
