2023 will be the year of Japan for The School of Jewelry Arts supported by Van Cleef & Arpels. In addition to a program of classes and lectures in the first quarter, it will transport its “Bird Paradise” exhibition, already organized in Paris in 2019, there.

The School of Jewelry Arts returns to Japan in 2023. Founded in 2012 in Paris, Place Vendôme, with the support of the House of Van Cleef & Arpels, it is organizing a new Japan Special Program in Tokyo from February 24 to March 10, 2023.

This is not the first time that this educational and cultural institution, the only one in the world to open the doors of the jewelry world to the general public, has travelled to Japan, this country of extreme refinement with which it resonates.

In 2013, a Nomadic School took place for the first time outside of France, in Japan, with various courses, interactive lectures and an exhibition. In 2019, the School returned to Tokyo. For this 2023 edition, the School of Jewelry Arts has chosen to deliver its program at the Gaien Campus, the bridgehead in Tokyo of the Kyoto University of the Art.

Courses and lectures

18 courses, including four new ones, led by professors and craftsmen who are experts in their fields, will be offered on the themes of “The History of Jewelry” (7 courses), “The World of Stones” (5 courses) and “Know-How” (6 courses). Lectures, i.e. interactive discussions on four topics related to jewelry, will also be offered, as well as five workshops for young people.

Japanese DNA and sustainable development will also be on the agenda: as in 2019, the interior design of the spaces where the program will be held will be imagined by the famous Japanese architect Sosuke Fujimoto. While the furniture and decoration will be made from renewable and recyclable wood, “in line with Van Cleef & Arpels’ commitment to sustainable practices.

Bird Paradise Exhibition

In addition to this program, the School of Jewelry Arts will also bring the “Paradis d’Oiseaux exhibition it previously hosted in Paris in 2019 to the Japanese archipelago. The exhibition will be held from January 20 to May 7, 2023 at the Intermediatheque (IMT) in Marunouchi, Tokyo, and is entitled Gokurakucho. The program will feature the combination of some 100 pieces of jewelry depicting bird motifs with bird specimens, scientific materials and artworks…

We are proud to support the School’s broad educational mission and the hands-on opportunities it provides for jewelry making and the jewellery arts around the world,” said Nicolas Bos, President and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels.

Around the world

Based in Paris and Hong Kong, the School of Jewelry Arts travels around the world. In addition to courses, conferences and exhibitions on its two permanent campuses in Paris and Hong Kong, it organizes special programs in Tokyo, New York and Dubai. It also provides valuable support for research through publications, partnerships with museums and other academic institutions, online educational videos and a specialized library….

Thanks to it, more than 50,000 participants from some 50 countries have already been able to explore the art of jewelry in its many dimensions.
