On Wednesday 2 December 2020, the Chairman of Jas Hennessy & Co signed a letter of commitment with the Nantes-based shipowner Neoline, to reduce the environmental impact of the spirits company’s transatlantic logistics flows. Hennessy has therefore joined forces with Renault, Manitou and Bénéteau to participate in the Neoline ecological project to build sailing cargo ships powered by wind energy.
For many years, Hennessy has been intensifying its efforts to limit the carbon footprint of the transportation of its products, in particular by promoting clean and responsible modes of circulation. “Maritime shipments have always been the determining factor in the development of Hennessy”, said Laurent Boillot, President of Jas Hennessy & Co. And with good reason: 94% of the spirits company’s shipments are made by rail or sea.
Thanks to the commitment recently made by Hennessy, 4 million containerized bottles will be transported by sailing ships between Montoir de Bretagne (France) and Baltimore (United States). The ships carrying Hennessy products will cross the Atlantic at an average speed of 11 knots on fixed monthly crossings.
Propelled mainly by wind power, these 136 m long sailing cargo ships will be equipped with four 200 m² sails, which will reduce their carbon footprint by 90% according to Neoline, which is in charge of their construction. Laurent Boillot stated that “the innovative and planet-friendly solutions developed by Neoline, which resonate with the adventurous DNA of the company, will enable us to significantly reduce our atmospheric emissions and to work for the protection of biodiversity.” By joining such a project, the Hennessy CEO wants to “ensure the sustainability of its activities at every stage, from the vine to the glass.”
Similarly, Jean Zanuttini, the President of Neoline, stated on behalf of the company that “We are very proud that Jas Hennessy & Co, one of France’s leading exporters to the United States, has chosen our environmentally friendly shipping solution to strengthen its impact reduction approach. Our commitment to maritime heritage, the crucible of innovation from which our project draws its roots, unites us around fundamental values. The participation of jas Hennessy & Co. in the pilot line represents an important first step in our collaboration, which will be extended to the transatlantic market in the future.” The launching of this transatlantic pilot line is scheduled for 2023.
