Listed since 2018 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the perfumes of the Pays de Grasse will now benefit from a new geographical indication: the “Pays de Grasse Absolute”. This label approved by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) is an official guarantee of quality and a certification of the origin of the perfumes.
The production of perfume is a long-standing tradition in the Grasse region, where very rare flowers such as jasmine, mimosa, orange blossom, rose, myrtle or lavender are found. It is from these raw materials that the concentrates are made, requiring a set of know-how of which Grasse is the crucible. Chanel has its own jasmine and rose plantations there. Grasse is indeed the capital of luxury fragrances, signed Chanel, but also Rochas or Dior.
If the Pays de Grasse is so popular, it is not only because of the many flowers that grow there. The fame of the region is more precisely due to the fact that it is the place of invention, in the 19th century, of a very precise manufacturing process: the extraction of the “absolute” essence. The obtaining of this natural extract is necessary for the concoction of many perfumes, aromas and cosmetics. In particular, it makes it possible to obtain a large quantity of flowers without altering their quality.
It is therefore because it is the historical master of the producers and transformers of perfume plants into “absolutes” that the Pays de Grasse is today certified with a new label. The geographical indication recently obtained by the territory distinguishes perfumes originating from the region from others, attesting to the notoriety, qualities and characteristics of the place of production. These specificities are listed in a specification examined by the INPI. The institution issued its label to the Pays de Grasse after an investigation and a public inquiry. Nine geographical indications – such as “Limoges porcelain” or “Aubusson tapestry” – had been approved since the implementation of the system in June 2015. In Grasse, seven companies are concerned by the new label – Firmenich, Jean Gazignaire SAS, IFF-LMR, Mane, Payan Bertrand SA, Robertet and Sotraflor – which represent 90% of the perfume plant processors in the region.
Obtaining such an indication for the country of Grasse will help protect the region’s perfumes from counterfeits and, a fortiori, from international competition. According to Armelle Janody, president of the association Fleurs d’Exceptions, which represents about twenty local producers, “if Grasse perfumers were subsequently weakened, it is because we were put in competition with foreign countries. But with the price of the land and the labor, we are blocked. The idea is to clearly identify our place. We are a niche market, our place is that of excellence. We are out of competition.”
For Armelle Janody, adding an INPI commercial label to UNESCO’s cultural recognition is “another milestone in local development” and “a real added value for world trade salons”. The new label for the Pays de Grasse would also “increase demand in absolute terms and thus the areas to be planted”, all good prospects for the kingdom of luxury perfumes.
