The Macallan has announced a partnership with British luxury car manufacturer Bentley Motors. This collaboration with an ultra-innovative and sustainable edge has resulted in a very limited edition single malt whisky called ‘The Macallan Horizon’.
The Macallan Horizon malt whisky prototype, which will be available from summer 2023, combines traditional craftsmanship with innovative materials, principles shared by Bentley Motors and the former Macallan distillery. The result is a unique horizontal design that defies the traditional vertical aesthetic of a whisky bottle and reflects the horizontal trajectory of the automotive world, pushing the boundaries and art of the possible.
Founded in 1824, The Macallan is one of the world’s most renowned and award-winning single malt whiskies. Macallan’s reputation is based on a product of exceptional quality and distinctive character, founded on a set of guiding principles, the Six Pillars.
As a tribute to these Six Pillars, The Macallan Horizon incorporates six unique materials, most of which are recycled, reused or ethically sourced. These include recycled copper from the small disused stills in The Macallan’s former distillery, aluminium recovered from the Bentley Motors manufacturing process, recycled wood, recyclable glass and carbon neutral leather, which is locally sourced and also used in the recently unveiled Bentley Mulliner Grand Tourer. The final pillar is the very special single malt whisky created for The Macallan Horizon.
Bentley’s Head of Design Collaborations, Chris Cooke, comments: “Our prototype for The Macallan Horizon is truly pioneering in both its design and use of materials. It is a fusion of Bentley’s curvaceous design DNA, The Macallan’s innovation and the recycled materials of both iconic British brands. The design form allowed us to treat light as a material in its own right, and the interaction between light and the wood, aluminium and copper materials is extraordinary. By being both an object of beauty in itself and demonstrating such innovation, it is a representation of what is to come from our partnership.”
Indeed, its innovative design features a glass bottle surrounded by a 3D structure with complex 180 degree twists, representing The Macallan and Bentley Motors’ mastery of space and time in creating the prototype, which has no standing base.
Jaume Ferras, Global Creative Director of The Macallan, says: “Taking inspiration from the automotive industry, we present our creative vision and development of The Macallan Horizon concept, which is one of the most unique projects we have undertaken in our almost 200 year history.”
On the flavour side, it was the same shared passions of both Houses for creativity, craft and innovation that inspired Kirsteen Campbell, Master Whisky Maker, to develop the spirit profile after a visit to Bentley Motors in Crewe, England.
Pricing and availability of The Macallan Horizon single malt whisky has not yet been released.
