It’s not yet -far from it- a tidal wave. But intelligent production Made in France, driven by new profiles and disruptive approaches, is making inroads into the luxury sector. The profile of the speakers at the roundtable discussion -the metamorphosis of production- organized on May 12, during the Luxury Summit in Paris, bears witness to this.
All of them engineers or highly qualified -Yann Buaillon, the deputy CEO of Percipio Robotics, Cyrile Deranlot, the President of Daumet, Tony Pinville, the President of Heuritech or Julien Tuffery, head of the Tuffery workshop- bring new solutions in the way of manufacturing.
Cyrile Deranlot, a specialist in materials physics at the CNRS, is a modern-day alchemist. He has developed the purest, and therefore whitest, gold in the world. “There were already two other processes. The one I found is cheaper and more environmentally friendly” he explains. His discovery caught the attention of the major luxury companies, who were confronted with the lack of durability of gilding in watchmaking, leather goods and textiles. With them, he developed a know-how to make exceptional gilding, which hangs on and lasts over time, hence the creation, in 2016, of the Daumet company.
Producing better and more sustainably
Tony Pinville, a doctor in artificial intelligence (AI), co-founded Heuritech in 2013. Thanks to AI, the start-up is able to analyze the countless fashion data from social networks (which strongly influence purchases) to enable companies to anticipate their future production, up to one year in advance. The tye and dye tee shirt is less talked about? It’s time to reduce its production. Winner of the Lvmh Innovation Award in 2017, Heuritech enables its luxury clients to produce better and more sustainably.
As for Yann Buaillon, an engineer from Arts & Métiers Paris Tech with a DEA in new product design, he joined the start-up Percipio Robotics in 2017 to participate in the micro-assembly revolution (i.e. the assembly of very small components). “We are able to bring back know-how to France by relying on digital technology,” he emphasizes. While he is having a little trouble getting conservative watchmakers on board, the jewelry industry is more receptive.
Finally, with a Master’s degree in management and engineering of environmental services and after an early career at Veolia, Julien Tuffery took over in 2015, with his engineer wife, the reins of the family business in the Cevennes. He has restored desirability and modernity to Atelier Tuffery, the oldest manufacturer in France (for a hundred years) of quality jeans. The company’s renaissance, which has been recognized by the Académie des savoir-faire Hermès, is based on the enhancement of its know-how (customers can buy their models in the workshop-store) and the latest equipment (3D, digitalization, etc https://ed-danmark.com/koeb-kamagra-...). With 40,000 pairs of jeans sold annually (at a price of 100 to 400 euros), turnover has risen from 100,000 to 4.5 million euros, and the workforce from 2 to 26 employees.
For Julien Tuffery, the 4.5 million euros invested in new tools have had a double virtuous effect, in terms of manufacturing excellence but also management. “We have equipped ourselves with high-performance machines capable of making up to 5,000 jeans a day, whereas we only produce 200. But above all, this facilitates the training of our employees, who are multi-taskers, to excellence. Not to mention that we have to adapt to the codes of young people, even if it means doing less but better” . This does not prevent the company from recruiting people who are in retraining (the vast majority of employees).
Attracting young (or not so young) recruits to an industry that still suffers from a Zola-like image, remains one of the major challenges faced by these new business models.
“With cobotics (cooperation of a robot with a human being), we digitize part of the know-how of people and avoid part of the repetitive tasks. This means more comfortable working conditions,” says Cyrile Deranlot (Daumet).
At Tuffery, we also think about the well-being of our employees, by starting each day with a stretching session…
