Luxury Hotelschool Paris is a management school specializing in the luxury hotel industry. It recently unveiled a study according to which 46% of 18-25 year olds would like to pursue a career in this field.
The study conducted by Luxury Hotelschool, in partnership with Opinion Way, focuses on “young French people and the luxury hotel industry“. It aims to understand and analyze the perception and attractiveness of the luxury hotel industry among French people aged 15 to 25. Despite a shortage of manpower, the study shows that this target group is interested in a career in this industry.
For a little over three years, all luxury sectors -including hotels and fashion- have been facing great difficulties, in a complex and heavy economic context. In addition to the financial disadvantages, covid has also strongly impacted this field.
However, the luxury hotel industry has managed to maintain its prestige and attractiveness by being inventive and innovative. During these slow years, professionals in the sector have had time to think about new strategies and new objectives. And this is finally paying off.
Among these new axes, the sector has worked to attract a new, younger clientele, to open prestigious brands and restaurants, to implement a new way of thinking and commitments to the environment. All these actions are innovative, in the air of time and speak to more people, especially young people.
The appeal of prestige
For many young people, the luxury industry is a dream, a hope, a choice. It offers dozens of opportunities such as travel, rapid career development in fascinating environments and the discovery of many different professions and cultures.
Among the reasons cited by respondents, 46% believe that salary is one of the main reasons to consider a career there. 44% are attracted by the prestige of the sector, 42% by the beauty of the workplaces and 39% by the possibility to travel. On the more professional side, 31% appreciate the human contact and 29% of respondents value the opportunities for professional growth.
The luxury hotel industry at the heart of their thoughts
When asked about the influence of French know-how on the international scene, the luxury hotel industry came in fourth place with 19% of respondents. Gastronomy came in first place with 51% of respondents. Luxury is second with 33% and the health sector third.
French know-how is a criterion of excellence, both for professionals and for future apprentices. The luxury hotel industry attracts the interest of young people in France: 46% of them say they are attracted to this field, and 20% of them are very attracted and plan to make a career in it.
A lack of manpower
Even if this field is interesting and has many positive sides, some shadows appear. 37% of respondents are reluctant to work in difficult conditions, and 20% are concerned about management methods. Contact with customers as well as oral fluency and verbal expression could also be an obstacle for 21% of them.
Last but not least, the study conducted by Luxury Hotelschool and Opinion Way reveals a lack of information on the various professions. For one respondent out of five, these are jobs that are attractive, but not well known. To remedy this, many trade shows have been organized, such as Excellence by Vendôme and Studyrama. Schools are also opening their doors to make themselves known.
Arnaud Bouvier, President of the Luxury Hotels School, gives his opinion on the issue: “Today, recruitment difficulties are real in our sector, even though it attracts people because of its prestige, its superb workplaces and the possibility of making a career on an international scale. But we also have to remove the obstacles, the main one being working conditions and management. Despite this, we are delighted to see that almost one in two young people are considering a career in the luxury hotel sector, which is a strong and promising figure.”
