The Louvre Abu Dhabi and Swiss watch brand Richard Mille are partnering to launch a new international exhibition, Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here, and an annual “Richard Mille Art Prize.”
Both initiatives support the talents of the contemporary art scene. The first edition, which will take place in conjunction with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Arab Emirates, highlights the work of Emirati artists and creators residing in the country.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here exhibition features the work of four to six contemporary artists active in various disciplines who will be selected through a call for proposals.
One of the selected artists will be awarded the Richard Mille Art Prize, worth $50,000, at a ceremony at Louvre Abu Dhabi. The collaboration between the museum and the Swiss watchmaker will last for 10 years.
“The launch of the Richard Mille Art Prize and the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here exhibition shows, once again, how committed Abu Dhabi is to supporting and promoting local talent, reinforcing its status as an inspiring and attractive destination for creatives from around the world,” said HE Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of Abu Dhabi‘s Department of Culture and Tourism. “We already know that internationally renowned artists live among us. This new award and exhibition will highlight the best talent in the UAE’s art scene as the country celebrates 50 years of success, and looks forward to the next 50 years.”
The call for proposals is open to Emirati artists and those residing in the UAE. This year, artists are invited to submit works on the theme of “Memory, Time and Territory“.
Peter Harrison, CEO of Richard Mille EMEA: “In just a few years, the Louvre Abu Dhabi has become one of the most iconic art museums in the world. Both Richard Mille and the Louvre Abu Dhabi have been built on principles of excellence in innovation, artistry, mastery and craftsmanship,” he explains. “As an avid art collector, I am inspired by the visionary perspectives brought by contemporary artists. I am therefore particularly proud to see this collaboration between the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Richard Mille come to life, which will help foster the next generation of talent. The Richard Mille Art Prize aims to redefine the parameters of contemporary creativity and offer exceptional artists the opportunity to unfold their potential.”
The Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here 2021 exhibition will run from November 2021 to March 2022, during a particularly exciting cultural season in the United Arab Emirates. During the same period, the Dubai 2020 exhibition, Abu Dhabi Art, Dubai Design Week and Art Dubai will take place.
