Each year, the economic observatory of the National Leather Council (CNC) reveals the statistics of trade between France and its main economic partners. The results show that the sector is in good health.

France consolidates its position as the world’s fourth largest player in the leather industry. The results of foreign trade in 2022 of the French leather industry have just been published by the economic observatory of the National Leather Council (CNC).

Since 2021, the industry has been on the rise and 2022 is no exception. Exports to the rest of the world have experienced last year a growth of 22% to 18 billion euros, an amount multiplied by two since 2015. Imports, meanwhile, have risen from €11 billion in 2021 to €13.6 billion in 2022, an increase of 24%.

“If the French Leather Industry maintains its position as the fourth largest exporter in the world, it is thanks to the determination of an entire ecosystem that shines through its exceptional know-how and its commitment to a more responsible, more sustainable fashion”, said Frank Boehly, President of the National Leather Council.“We are witnessing a real revolution in consumption patterns. In response, the industry has been able to renew itself and adapt to the challenges of our contemporary societies. I would like to highlight the performance of all the players who participate in the prestige of our industry.”

More exports than imports

French exports of the industry represent 6.3% of world exports. They are made up of 67% leather goods, 28% footwear, 3% raw materials and 2% gloves and other clothing.

Demand for French luxury goods is still strong internationally. Sales in Asia increased by 17%, 20% in Europe and 42% in the Americas. China, France’s largest customer in 2021, is now outpaced by the United States. They account for 14% of France’s exports for a total of 2.5 billion euros.

For several years, the CNC has exported more than it imports. It is with Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States and the United Kingdom that trade is most in surplus. It should be noted that Italy remains France’s leading European supplier. French imports from this country (3.3 billion euros) have increased by 23% in 2022.

French leather imports are composed of 61% of footwear, 31% of leather goods, 5% of raw materials and 3% of gloves and clothing.

A successful sector

Although all the players in the sector show heterogeneous performances, the year 2022 ended positively for all sectors.

France is the world’s third largest exporter of raw hides and skins (7.1% of world exports), and the sector is largely in surplus, with a coverage rate of 167%. While exports have been declining since 2013, there is a nice recovery: + 39% in 2021 and + 5% in 2022. Sales of raw calf hides are up 25%.

In tannery and leather goods, exports are up 17%, after having increased by 21% in 2021. If they had regressed by 38% during the pandemic, there is a clear improvement even if sales abroad are still down 13% compared to 2019.

Since 2010, French footwear exports had been growing at a steady pace of about 10% per year. A trend interrupted in 2020, with the slowdown in global demand related to the pandemic. In 2021, exports have started to grow again (+15%) and will benefit from an even greater boom in 2022 (+26%).

Finally, France is the world’s 3rd largest exporter of leather goods, and trade in this sector is still largely in surplus. The amount of exports (12.1 billion euros) is almost triple that of imports (4.3 billion euros). French exports have increased by 21% in 2022 compared to 2021 and represent 15.5% of world exports.
