It is no longer a rumor, François-Henry Bennahmias, the CEO of Audemars Piguet, the Swiss watch brand, will leave his position at the end of 2023.

François-Henry Bennahmias will step down as CEO of the luxury watch brand Audemars Piguet at the end of next year to pursue other challenges. The brand’s board of directors is looking for his successor.

After 30 successful years in our company, including the last 10 years as CEO, François-Henry Bennahmias wishes, in agreement with the board of directors, to take on new challenges from 2024,” the Brassus-based manufacture told AWP. However, he will “continue to exercise his duties to the full” until the arrival of his successor.

François-Henry Bennahmias had joined the company in 1994 before taking over as CEO in 2012. “I’ve been in this position for ten years, and I think it’s time to move on, also for the good of the company,” he explained to Le Temps magazine.

The Bennahmias method

His primary objective in becoming CEO was to strengthen a corporate culture that he felt lacked alignment. “Our employees need to know what we want to do in terms of volume, quality and distribution, so that they can follow our strategy and our way of operating,” he explained, claiming a clear vision of his brand strategy.

He has had a knack for bonding his teams through team-building events, while valuing the culture of exclusivity that is unique to luxury. Indeed, he began a repositioning of the brand, drastically reducing the number of outlets and capping production between 2015 and 2020. The result? Sales in 2019 were 1.2 billion Swiss francs compared to 550 million in 2011.

In addition to his managerial skills, he was able to demonstrate his renewal by proposing the Code 11.59 range in early 2019. Even if the reception was mixed at first, the success came and the range was awarded the Grand Prix de la Haute Horlogerie. More than 2,000 pieces were sold in the first year of marketing. “In 145 years, Audemars Piguet has produced more non-octagonal watches than octagonal ones. I am sure that this new range will find its place“, he commented at the time.

The future of Audemars Piguet

Audemars Piguet, which has 2,500 employees, claims annual sales of 1.6 billion Swiss francs. According to its boss, the brand is experiencing “recruitment problems in certain specific areas“, notably IT.

A new campus is being built to bring together all the brand’s activities, occupying five sites in the Joux Valley and will also include a training center. The brand is also investing in its Meyrin site for boxes and bracelets.

Let’s hope that François-Henry Bennahmias’ departure will be smooth and that the innovations and methods he has put in place to keep the watch brand at this level of excellence will continue with his successor.
