A long and expected renovation, for a result that is at the appointment. This morning, the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, owned by the IHG Hotels & Resorts group, reopened its doors to the public at 58 Boulevard de la Croisette.
The Carlton de Cannes, this magnificent and immense hotel also called La grande dame, finally opens its doors after two and a half years of closure and seven years of renovation work. The work will have cost nearly 350 million euros. A huge and unprecedented project for the establishment dating from more than a century, which had never undertaken such work since its inauguration.
A great icon of the Riviera for 100 years, the Carlton is the first luxury hotel to open its doors in Cannes. Known for hosting movie stars, presidents and other celebrities, it has become a singular and renowned establishment, which accumulates many secrets and anecdotes.
From the outside, nothing seems to have changed. And yet, the facades have all been renovated and even enlarged. And what’s new after this major renovation is that the hotel has two new wings, which measure 20 000 square meters and house 37 new luxury suites. It also has a new and very (very) large infinity pool and terraces.
Eclectic decor
For the interior of this mythical palace, the management has chosen to honor the know-how, craftsmanship and art trades. The director of this large-scale decorative project? Tristan Auer, architect and interior designer : “From the very beginning, the idea has been to skilfully preserve the listed premises, while creating a modern-day masterpiece,” reads his website.
Known for his geometric and singular approach, he brought a touch of impertinence to the natural layout of the Carlton. His source of inspiration for redecorating this place is simply the warm and colorful region that is the French Riviera. He was able to rely on Richard Lavelle, a restoration specialist, to assist him in this renovation.
To help them develop this work, the two decoration experts were supported by 750 specialized craftsmen: stone cutters, masons, plasterers, carpenters, cabinet makers… All the trades were brought together.
Nothing was left to chance. In the hall, there are chandeliers signed Paolo Venini, one of the leading figures in the production of Murano glass, of art deco inspiration. In the Grand Salon, gigantic chandeliers have been restored by experienced craftsmen. Other pieces were created especially for the establishment. This decoration is a blend of past and present, forming a synergy, in a place full of history.
The Carlton’s work also includes the renovation of the hotel’s 343 rooms and suites, the interior of the hotel’s reception hall, the creation of a meeting room of more than 800 m2 and the construction of four large modular rooms.
The reopening of the Carlton Cannes is another great addition to the portfolio of the IHG Group, which has iconic properties around the world in Hong Kong, London, New York, Paris, Dubai and even Singapore. This new Cannes chapter, which blends history and the future, bodes well.
