The Chinese company CATL, which specialises in the manufacture of car batteries, is considering opening a major factory in Shanghai.
CATL, which supplies batteries to the automotive giant Tesla, will be able to consolidate its position as world leader in this sector through this expansion project.
More and more car manufacturers are planning to switch to electric vehicles in the next few years due to the introduction of numerous environmental standards. Battery manufacturers are therefore forced to increase their production capacity in order to respond to the growing demand.
CATL has been a supplier to Tesla since the launch of the Model 3, and will therefore set up near the carmaker’s Chinese production base, with the aim of becoming its largest supplier. Indeed, CATL could potentially supply half of the battery cells that Tesla uses for its electric vehicles. In talks with Tesla about a greater collaboration between the two companies, Tesla has asked the Chinese company for help with battery solutions.
The future factory would therefore be capable of producing 80 gigawatt hours of battery cells per year, to power around 800,000 electric cars, according to analysts. In particular, it would employ 5,000 workers in the manufacture of cell-chassis batteries.
In comparison, the current CATL batteries in the Tesla Model 3 have a capacity of 468 km per charge. In fact, according to CATL president Zeng Yuqun, electric vehicles could achieve a range of more than 800 km thanks to the new technology integrated into the future batteries.
This expansion plan would therefore be a source of competitive pressure on Tesla’s two other battery suppliers, the Japanese Panasonic Corp and South Korean LG Energy Solution, particularly justified by the figures achieved by CATL in early 2021. CATL, whose customers also include Volkswagen, General Motors, BMW and Daimler, has almost quadrupled its battery sales in the first four months of 2021, according to SNE Research.
