After the spectacular and fabulous Men’s Fashion Week, it’s time for Haute Couture Week for Autumn-Winter 2023-24. This is by far the most remarkable and, given its rarity and exclusivity, undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited. Every year, the greatest Maisons, entitled to the appellation of couture, are bursting with inventiveness to unveil their new collections. But this Haute Couture week kicks off against a backdrop of tension and riots, casting a shadow over the calendar.
Questions, cancellations and postponements: the start of Haute Couture Fashion Week is not going according to plan, due to the climate of tension that reigns in the Parisian capital.
Fashion is no exception to the rule. A curfew has been introduced in some of the city’s neighboring communes to protect citizens and quell the riots. Numerous cultural events are gradually being canceled, including some Fashion Week couture shows, starting with Céline, which was forced to cancel its show, scheduled for last night out of schedule.

The fashion house’s artistic director, Hedi Slimane, said at the start of the weekend that “a fashion show in Paris, at a time when France and its capital are in mourning, was inconsiderate and totally inappropriate“.
Two other off-schedule fashion shows took place over the weekend: Patou and Alaïa. Both Houses decided to continue with their shows, despite the gray skies and tense atmosphere. A few minutes of fashion for months of work, which obviously outweighed unprecedented Parisian events.

For its part, the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode confirmed that unless “prescribed otherwise by the authorities”, the shows “will be held as planned“, from today until Thursday.
A couture week in danger?
This year, Paris Haute Couture Week welcomes some thirty labels, from Iris Van Harpen to Jean Paul Gaultier and Schiaparelli. Schiaparelli, a Parisian fashion house since 1927, officially opened Fashion Week at 10 a.m. on Monday. Last winter, Schiaparelli, under the creative direction of Daniel Roseberry, caused controversy with its animal dresses.
A few novelties this year too. The first Saudi designer, Ashi, will be on the catwalk during this Parisian week. Known for its sensual silhouettes and meticulous finishes, the Saudi fashion house is already a regular on red carpets and a friend of stars such as Beyoncé and Lady Gaga.
This week also sees the arrival of new designers such as Thom Browne and fashion’s new darling: Charles de Vilmorin.
This 26-year-old designer, often compared to Yves Saint Laurent, will present his first physical show, after two digital collections during the pandemic. Artistic Director of Rochas for a short period, this designer with big glasses will have the opportunity to showcase his talent and creativity, as overflowing as it is colorful, tonight at 6pm.
Tomorrow, Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Alexandre Vauthier and Stéphane Rolland will take to the stage to unveil their new collections. The eponymous designer Stéphane Rolland will present a fashion show dedicated to the singer Maria Callas at the Opéra Garnier, to be filmed by Claude Lelouch for his forthcoming film.
On Wednesday, big names such as Elie Saab, Viktor and Rolf, Balenciaga and the long-awaited Jean Paul Gaultier show will light up the capital, almost as bright as the Eiffel Tower.
And on the final day of Couture Week, Imane Ayissi, Adeline André, Fendi and a host of other labels will be on hand.
Provided, of course, that everything goes off without a hitch, and that this Week, so eagerly awaited by the fashion sphere, is able to unveil all its talents.
