At Watches & Wonders, the International Fine Watchmaking Exhibition held in Geneva from March 27 to April 2, Tag Heuer presented its new Carrera Plasma. This watch is the first from the watch brand to use colored diamonds grown in a laboratory.
Tag Heuer’s Carrera is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary in style. In 2023, the Swiss watchmaker founded in 1860 will present its new Carrera Plasma, which will push the limits of creation even further.
The Tag Heuer Carrera Plasma, presented at Watches and Wonders 2023, is the brand’s first watch to use colored diamonds grown in a laboratory. And it does so while combining cutting-edge watchmaking expertise with elegant aesthetics.
Tag Heuer made this choice because the company has long supported the use of modern and innovative technologies in watchmaking.
Diamond, whether natural or grown in a laboratory, is made up of a regular arrangement of carbon atoms. A perfect diamond has almost no defects in this arrangement and is completely colorless.
“The main challenge was undoubtedly the color”, explains Emmanuel Dupas, director of the Tag Heuer Institute. “To obtain a colored diamond, you have to introduce some disorder into this perfect arrangement, in a controlled way.”
Pushing the technological limits
The disorder mentioned by Emmanuel Dupas can be due to the addition of atoms of different elements such as silicon or germanium, or to the presence of defects.
“The CVD process [Chemical Vapour Deposition, a method used to create grown diamonds in the laboratory] makes it possible to introduce these defects during the growth process, in a well-controlled environment”, the institute’s director explains. “In this way, the diamond is colored from end to end and in a homogeneous manner. Very specific know-how – like that of our partner Proud – is required to master this process and be able to reproduce the same color, batch after batch.”
The distinctive design codes of the Tag Heuer Carrera, this time in muted pink hues, provide a backdrop for the diamond-embellished dial.
“What better model to choose to push the boundaries of technology, design codes and the history of traditional luxury watchmaking than one of Tag Heuer’s most iconic watches: the Tag Heuer Carrera?” mischievously questions Emmanuel Dupas.
New era
The new piece embodies the creativity and innovation that technology allows. Indeed, the new Carrera Plasma brilliantly combines light effects, design and innovative materials.
“The Tag Heuer Carrera Plasma comes at a key moment in our history. It carries an innovation that we have been working on for a long time, which we have called the Avant-Garde Diamond, and marks the beginning of a new chapter in our history. I think this is a defining moment for the brand and for the luxury watch industry at large.”
With its design, revolutionary techniques and remarkable dial, the watch could well become timeless. But we’ll have to wait until September 2023 before we have a chance to wear this timepiece.
