On Wednesday, November 18, 2020, Bugatti’s current president, Stephan Winkelmann, was appointed to head the Lamborghini company, replacing Stefano Domenicali. The new CEO of the Italian luxury car company is expected to take office on December 1.
“It is a great honor and pleasure for me to lead these two unique companies”, Winkelmann said after his appointment as CEO of Lamborghini. In this position, the German manager succeeds Stefano Domenicali, who has been appointed to the management of Formula One, the promoter of F1.
Stephan Winkelmann, 56, had already headed Lamborghini between 2005 and 2016, before taking over as head of the sports division of the Audi Group, a subsidiary of Volkswagen. Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Volkswagen Group’s Board of Directors, said: “Stephan Winkelmann decisively shaped the history of Lamborghini.” The Italian businessman presided over the birth of two of Lamborghini’s most admirable models: the Lamborghini Aventador and Huracán, which are still available for sale, led to a sharp increase in the company’s revenues.
Since 2018, Stephan Winkelmann had also been CEO of the French luxury brand Bugatti, a position that the German manager will keep. Since both Bugatti and Lamborghini belong to the Volkswagen Group, there is no conflict of interest in running for the management of these two companies. Nevertheless, this merger under the leadership of one man is not without consequences and may generate potentially life-saving synergies for these giants of the luxury car industry.
As Stephan Winkelmann himself emphasizes: “Bugatti is the symbol of the world’s most powerful, elegant and luxurious hypersports cars. Lamborghini builds the most exclusive supersports cars with exceptional design. Our creativity is still far from exhausted in both companies and the world can expect a few surprises.”
