As the hotel group prepares to open its first resort in Saudi Arabia, the Six Senses Southern Dunes, by the end of the year, it is already announcing a second, to be set up in the natural region of Amaala, on the shores of the Red Sea. Both projects have been developed in partnership with Red Sea Global, a land and real estate megaproject announced by the Crown Prince in 2017.

When you think of vacations, you don’t necessarily think of the desert country of Saudi Arabia. Yet this kingdom is aiming to be the fastest-growing tourist destination in the G20.

And Six Senses‘ projects are no mirage. The group has just announced the forthcoming opening, at a date as yet unknown, of its second luxury resort in the country, the Six Senses Amaala.

Six Senses is already preparing to open the Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea in the kingdom by the end of the year. This will be in the middle of the desert, 100 km north-west of the seaside town of Umlu. The project had already been carried out with Red Sea Global. This land and real estate megaproject had been announced in mid-2017 by Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salmon. Part of the Saudi Vision 2030 project, it aims to be a driving force in regenerative (luxury) tourism…

An exceptional natural site

For its second location in the kingdom, Six Senses has chosen an exceptional site, this time on the shores of the Red Sea: stretching over 4,155 square kilometers, the unspoilt Amaala Nature Reserve has it all: unspoilt landscapes and coastal reefs, spectacular mountains, pristine white sand beaches. But also, at the heart of the site, another geological splendor, Mesa, whose overhangs and caves are rich in fossilized corals and mollusks.

There’s nothing inaccessible about this paradise, since it’s not only close to the main regional destinations of Riyadh, Dubai and Istanbul, but also less than six hours from Paris, Rome, Berlin or Mumbai

Designed by architects U+A and Studio Carter, Six Senses Amaala is inspired by the region’s traditional coastal villages, using locally sourced materials and adapting to the natural topography. That is, one of the most spectacular landforms in the Amaala Triple Bay area, with panoramic views of Hijaz Bay and the Red Sea!

Several accommodation options

Six Senses Amaala will offer a variety of accommodation options: beachfront residences and villas bordering the private mangrove bay, all within a hillside village.

A total of 64 rooms, six suites, 30 villas and 25 brand residences.

The complex will blend into the meandering terrain, with winding streets and paths leading to “enchanting” squares, and diverse panoramas of Pura Creek and its “iridescent blue” lagoons.

Luxury residences will be located in the northern part of the village, with its family pool, Hijaz Cove beaches and beach restaurant.

The south of the village will offer a wilder option, with natural pools, secluded beaches and a mangrove walk leading to the resort’s spa, itself set in a private cove.

This spa itself will offer a host of possibilities: cryotherapy chamber, longevity clinic, thermal zones for men and women with Finnish and infrared saunas, herbal hammams, salt rooms, vitality pools and ice baths, sound dome… More active guests will enjoy the Watsu pool, yoga platform before relaxing in the multi-sensory relaxation areas.

Holistic experience

But it doesn’t stop there: Six Senses Amaala aims for a holistic experience, based on three pillars: “wellness and sports”, “arts and culture”, and “sea, sun and lifestyle”…. “We are bound by a shared commitment to the practice, appreciation and promotion of arts and culture, wellness and environmental preservation,” said Six Senses CEO Neil Jacobs. “Six Senses Amaala is part of a holistic center for the arts, a premier diving destination, an extension of Mediterranean pleasure corridors and an integrated wellness community, which we hope will inspire guests to embark on transformative personal journeys.”

Adults will be able to choose from a wide range of activities, socializing in communal lounges, while clubs will entertain children and teenagers.

The senses will be pampered in a variety of ways, with discovery sessions in the coffee roastery, the bakery, the water bar, in the shisha tea room or via catering, “Incorporating the Eat With Six Senses philosophy.” This philosophy favours natural ingredients, local and sustainable products and the principle of “less is more”. With Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Southeast Asian influences…

The spiritual dimension, crucial in the country, is not forgotten, with prayer rooms.

Sustainable development

Finally, sustainable development is “a cornerstone of the resort’s construction and operating practices”.

The promoters of the resort, “which aspires to become a premier destination for diving and boating”, state that they “attach great importance to the conservation of the marine and coastal ecosystem”.

Six Senses Amaalal is thus taking steps to minimize its environmental footprint: a dedicated desalination plant with no impact on coral reefs, a ban on single-use plastics, the use of wastewater and organic waste for agriculture, etc. The resort’s energy needs will be met by renewable sources.

“This announcement also comes at an exciting time as we are about to welcome the first guests to Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea, which will open its doors in the coming months,” said John Pagano, Red Sea Global Group CEO. “Our growing relationship with the Six Senses brand across our expanding portfolio reflects our belief in the quality of operations it brings to each property, and our shared commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment,” he added.
