On Tuesday, November 24, the airing of an ad for Dior perfume Sauvage during an episode of the Great British Bake Off sparked a wave of controversy in the United Kingdom. The actor appeared on screen playing his guitar after losing a libel suit against the publishers of the British newspaper The Sun for beating his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

November 2, 2020, the beginning of the descent into hell for Johnny Depp, accused by his ex-wife Amber Heard of physically abusing her during their marriage, between 2015 and 2017. It was indeed on this date that it was announced that the American actor had lost his libel suit against the editors of the tabloid The Sun. In a 2018 article, the newspaper described Johnny Depp as a “wife-beater”, citing Amber Heard’s confession that her ex-husband had assaulted her 14 times, in part because of his drug and alcohol use. Judge Andrew Nicol said in early November that this was “substantially true”.

Following the announcement of the verdict, Johnny Depp wrote in a shared article on Instagram that Warner Bros. production had demanded his resignation from the film “Fantastic Animals”. If the consequences of the trial could be very heavy for the actor’s career, Dior seems to have remained faithful to him by broadcasting an advertisement featuring him on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, November 24th. The reason for this blunder: the advertisement had certainly been made before the court’s decision was revealed. To redeem itself, LVMH declared its support for a campaign led by the French government to help victims of domestic violence.

The announcement by the luxury firm to pay for a hotel room for victims of domestic violence did not, however, prevent British viewers from becoming outraged. After the advertisement for the perfume Sauvage aired, the Advertising Standards Authority in charge of regulating advertising in the United Kingdom received “a total of 11 complaints, with complainants believing that Johnny Depp should not appear in the advertisement because of details about his recent court case.”

Moreover, it is not the first time that an advertisement in which the actor plays is criticized. In 2019, a first campaign for the perfume Sauvage had indeed aroused hostile reactions because of the inclusion of stereotypical representations of Amerindians in the advertisement. Johnny Depp said then that “the film was made with respect for the Native American people, not only in North America but around the world.”

The actor’s defense is currently ensured by Johnny Depp’s supporters, who consider Dior’s recent publicity as a proof of loyalty to the star, who has been ousted from all the sets. Last weekend, these same fans shared the hashtag #JusticeForJohnnyDepp on Twitter and praised Dior for not excluding the actor from the campaign.
