As Rome breathes history around every corner, the city’s renowned hotels are pushing back the boundaries of luxury. For some time now, hotel groups have been setting up shop in Rome, offering travelers an experience that harmoniously blends ancestral heritage, classic elegance and contemporary design.

On a global scale, Rome stands out as the only capital city poised to welcome the opening of 13 luxury hotels over the next two years. The Eternal City has always lagged behind Milan in terms of its position in luxury markets, encompassing both the rates charged and the number of high-quality hotel establishments.

Historically, Rome has been perceived more as a destination with a strong cultural connotation. But the advent of low-cost airlines has democratized travel considerably, making it affordable for a wide public. Like any other major destination, Rome is now repositioning itself to strengthen its appeal and accentuate its aura of luxury, while maintaining high fare levels.

Recently, the number of luxury hotels opening in Rome has multiplied. This phenomenon is often motivated by a number of economic, social and tourism-related factors.

Bvlgari Hotel

Scheduled to open on June 9, the Bulgari Hotel Roma brings the emblematic charms of the Bulgari brand to the Eternal City. This new destination instantly becomes emblematic, given Rome’s role as Bulgari’s city of origin and inexhaustible source of inspiration. The new property takes up residence in a prestigious address in Piazza Augusto Imperatore, in the heart of the Campo Marzio district.

Featuring 114 rooms and suites, each decorated in a color palette inspired by the city, the hotel also offers the culinary and lifestyle experiences characteristic of Bulgari establishments, including Il Ristorante – Niko Romito, the Bulgari Bar, the Lobby Lounge, the Spa, as well as Italy’s very first Bulgari Dolci chocolate and patisserie. With its 114 suites, spa, swimming pool, gym and library dedicated to the history of jewelry, the establishment is also home to the magnificent Bulgari Suite, overlooking the Mausoleum of the Emperor Augustus.

Bulgari architects Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel chose imperial marble as the main material, skilfully worked with imposing blocks of color to evoke Bulgari’s identity as a Roman jeweller. Thanks to their bold vision, the original 1940s building has been transformed into a magnificent modern monument.

The Edition Rome

Conceived by visionary entrepreneur Ian Schrager and implemented by hotel owner Statuto Group, the intimate 91-room EDITION Rome established its presence in the Eternal City last July. Nestled in one of Rome’s most sought-after districts, the establishment is ideally located just a few steps from Via Veneto, Italy’s most emblematic thoroughfare. Immortalized in “La Dolce Vita”, this street embodies Italian brilliance in all its splendor. Dating from the 1940s and once the headquarters of one of Italy’s leading banks, the building is a striking example of the rationalist style, designed by engineer Cesare Pascoletti in collaboration with renowned architect Marcello Piacentini.

The hotel offers a range of three unique bars, as well as a lounge, a rooftop poolside bar, and a restaurant with a kitchen visible to guests. In addition, it offers a fully equipped urban wellness area, including a gym and treatment rooms. Guests can also enjoy a spacious indoor garden, where they can savor their favorite beverage or sample the exceptional gourmet dishes of acclaimed Roman chef Paola Colucci, also a partner of the hotel.

The 91 rooms, including 17 suites, embody all the design elements for which the brand is renowned: neutral tones, walnut wood accents and stunning bespoke furnishings. A first for the city, the hotel features yet another vast, lush garden, offering a green oasis in the heart of Rome’s urban bustle.

Intercontinental Rome Ambasciatori

The Intercontinental Rome Ambasciatorin opened its doors last May. Strategically located in the heart of Rome, close to the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon, the hotel offers privileged access to the city’s most emblematic landmarks. With its 160 luxury rooms and suites, the hotel offers an experience that harmoniously blends contemporary design with neoclassicism, creating a setting influenced by the grandeur of ancient Rome.

The Scarpetta NYC restaurant, Charlie’s Rooftop and Anita’s Bar and Lounge are just some of the exclusive gathering places that the Intercontinental Rome Ambasciatori offers its guests.

The hotel’s design was orchestrated by Italian architect Carlo Busiri Vici. Its name, InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace, derives from the historic building it occupies. Formerly known as the “Ambasciatori Palace”, it was inaugurated in 1905 to welcome ambassadors visiting Rome. From 1946 to 1993, the Hotel Palace was home to the U.S. Embassy Library.

As part of the group’s luxury and lifestyle collection, which includes brands such as Six Senses, Regent, Vignette Collection, Kimpton and Hotel Indigo, the InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace is one of 450 hotels in this category. This sustained expansion meets the growing demand for prestigious and unique destinations. Indeed, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts plans to open more than 30 hotels of this size over the next two years, confirming its commitment to exceptional hospitality and an unrivalled customer experience.

Umiltà 36

Following the inaugurations of Vilon Roma and Maalot Hotel, the Shedir collection continues its trajectory under the aegis of luxury hotel veteran Claudio Ceccherelli. In July 2022, the collection proudly opened the doors of its third prestigious establishment in Rome: Umiltà 36. Nestled in the heart of the city, this exceptional establishment occupies a restored historic building and reveals a meticulous aesthetic designed by Italian architects from the renowned agency, Caberlon Caroppi Italian Touch.

Umiltà 36 offers a refined selection of 47 rooms, suites and apartments, all exquisitely furnished and equipped with all the comforts guests expect. The attention paid to ceiling height, thanks to the use of solid wood panelling, respects the authenticity characteristic of the 1950s. Among these options, the 17 apartments stand out for their living room equipped with a kitchenette, an ideal solution for extended stays without sacrificing comfort or elegance. There are also two suites with terraces offering breathtaking views over Rome’s picturesque rooftops.

Since its opening, the hotel has been a resounding success, welcoming an international clientele of varied nationalities. It’s worth pointing out that, in addition to the exceptional furnishings, outstanding gastronomy and ideal location, maintaining a consistently high level of personalized customer service remains an unwavering priority. Breakfast stands out as one of the best among Rome’s luxury establishments, while reception and room maintenance services unfold with impeccable execution.

Baccarat Hotels

SH Hotels & Resorts, the hotel brand management company founded by hotel visionary Barry Sternlicht, Chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group, in collaboration with Boscalt Hospitality, a hospitality-focused real estate company investing in major European cities, co-founded by Liza Masias and Jaume Tapies, today unveiled an ambitious project. The project involves transforming the Eternal City’s iconic Hotel Majestic under the prestigious banner of the French luxury house Baccarat.

The curtain is due to rise at the end of 2025, following a complete restoration. The establishment is set to embody the timeless splendor of Baccarat. Since its inauguration in 1889 as the very first luxury hotel on the legendary Via Veneto, majestically overlooking the Piazza Barberini and within walking distance of the Spanish Steps, the property has welcomed a host of royalty, noblemen, politicians, celebrities and distinguished travelers for over a century. These guests chose this location as their headquarters for their iconic Roman sojourns.

The transformation will see the hotel converted into 83 spacious rooms and suites. The public facilities will feature three large-scale dining rooms, including the main restaurant opening onto a large terrace offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Via Veneto. The space will also host an intimate cocktail bar, an elegant rooftop bar, state-of-the-art meeting and conference spaces, as well as a full-service spa and fitness center. The redevelopment process will carefully preserve the property’s iconic elegance, thanks to the talent of architect Gaetano Koch, while infusing a sleek, contemporary touch.

Romeo Collection

The ROMEO Collection is preparing to inaugurate its second project, ROMEO Roma, in October 2023. Nestled just a few steps from the Piazza del Popolo in the heart of Rome, this establishment will redefine luxury, art and gastronomy in the city. Designed by world-renowned Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, the new building will harmoniously blend historic prestige with the audacity of contemporary architecture.

Housed in a historic palazzo dating from the late 16th century, the 74-room hotel will be one of the most spacious in the city, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the rooftops and Piazza del Popolo. Promising an exceptional experience that transcends the standards of five-star hospitality, ROMEO Roma will feature a gourmet restaurant, a bistro inspired by Neapolitan tradition, an outdoor courtyard of over 2,000 square meters enhanced by indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a rooftop lounge and bar. In addition, an international art collection and a wellness area developed in partnership with Sisley Paris will enrich the establishment’s offering.

Driven by its passion for collaborating with innovative architects, the ROMEO Collection has teamed up with Zaha Hadid to infuse ROMEO Roma with its distinctive style, subtly blending history and contemporary design.
