The historic Maison-Dieu, a property of the University Hospital of Poitiers, will be sold for the sum of 600,000€ and will soon house a luxury hotel-restaurant.
The signing of the agreement for the conversion of the Maison-Dieu site took place on Friday, July 1, in the Chapelle Saint-Laurent located just a stone’s throw from the Maison-Dieu in Montmorillon, a town in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
This eleventh century building will be destined to host one of the branches of the Robuchon Project in 2025. The Maison-Dieu will be rehabilitated into a professional training site and a luxury gastronomy-hotel.
A luxury application hotel-restaurant managed by the starred chef Régis Marcon will take place in this location, as desired by the late French starred chef Joël Robuchon, as part of the International Institute of French Gastronomy.
The Joël Robuchon International Institute of French Gastronomy will be spread over three sites: at Futuroscope, at the Grand-Pont high school in Chasseneuil-du-Poitou, and in Montmorillon, of course. “A new page is being turned,” said Alain Pichon, president of the Vienne departmental council.
Moreover, the latter also declared that the EPFNA, the Établissement public foncier Nouvelle-Aquitaine, will organize a major work session in order to make the “building clean and reveal the potential of this architectural jewel so that the investor can have a clearer vision,” Alain Pichon later specified.
However, not all of Montmorillon’s historic sites will be invested by the Robuchon Project. The mayor of Montmorillon, Bernard Blanchet, has stated that he does not want the historic sites of the Chapelle Saint-Laurent or the Octogone – a Romanesque chapel – to be privatized. “These are emblematic places of the city that must be kept public so that there is a second life for the Cité de l’Écrit.
Through this project, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and Régis Marcon pay tribute to one of the greatest French chefs – if not the greatest – Joël Robuchon. Crowned “Best Worker in France” in 1976, “Chef of the Year” in 1987 and “Chef of the Century” in 1990, he is currently the chef with the most Michelin stars in the world, with 32.
Having contributed to highlighting a rich gastronomic know-how, Joël Robuchon’s contribution to French gastronomy remains undeniable. Since his death in 2018, the myth of this unmissable chef continues to live on in the many kitchens of France and will continue to inspire chefs around the world for a long time to come.
