The Redress Design Award is the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition. The competition organiser, Redress, is an environmental NGO working to reduce waste in the fashion industry. The competition aims to educate emerging fashion designers from around the world in sustainable design techniques.

The Redress Design Award competition was created in order to transform the global fashion industry and reward the best players in the field by offering them prizes, in order to maximise the long-term impact of this competition. The textile industry, considered as the second most polluting industry, remains a major issue in the organisation of this competition.

The 2021 edition is coming to an end and this year’s 10 finalists have just been revealed. Shortlisted from more than 550 applications received from 58 different countries and regions, they will compete in the grand final on September the 11th 2021 in Hong Kong.

Which future for the winner of the final?

For the future winners of the grand final, the stakes for their future career in fashion are high. The first prize winner of the Redress Design Award 2021 will join the Timberland team of VF Corporation (VF) for a collaboration. The winner will also receive a development fund of HK$50,000 ($6,400), two high-performance JUKI sewing machines and a subscription to Bloomsbury Fashion Central. These awards will enable him to ensure that the materials and design strategies of his designs maximise their sustainability, while deepening his skills and understanding around sustainable production and marketing.

The runner-up will receive a tailored mentoring with Orsola de Castro, a leading sustainable fashion designer, judge of the competition, who is also considered as one of the most influential figures in the sustainable fashion field.

As Christina Dean, Founder and President of Redress, says: “The collaboration with CreateHK [competition sponsor] and other industry partners, such as Timberland, is the key to achieve the mission of the Redress Design Award – educate emerging fashion designers to stimulate the circular fashion system. […] We need to create a pathway for all fashion professionals to stop the negative impacts of fashion. ”

The competition is therefore of vital importance in the world of fashion and the textile industry, as Christophe Degoix, an international judge and COO of TAL Group, one of the world’s leading garment manufacturers, says: “Promoting sustainable products is essential for the future of the clothing industry and these young designers from around the world are showing us the way. ”

See you on September the 11th to find out who of the 10 finalists will be the winner of the Redress Design Award 2021 Grand Final!
