Sotheby’s, the American multinational art and collectibles auction house, sold a giant 55.22-carat ruby for $34.8 million in New York, a record for this stone. The sale of this stone, exhibited in Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Geneva and Dubai, was a major event in the jewelry world.
34.8 million dollars. This is the record sum for which a giant 55.22-carat ruby, christened Estrela de Fura, was sold in New York on Thursday. It is the largest ruby ever sold at auction, announced Sotheby’s.
The jewel was cut and fashioned from a 101-carat rough stone found in September in a mine in Montepeuz, Mozambique, operated by Fura Gems. The ruby was the focal point of this 100-lot jewelry auction.

Originally priced at $21 million, it was eventually sold for $30 million, or $34.8 million with fees and commissions, to an anonymous buyer over the phone.
A Sotheby’s spokeswoman indicated that the buyer was a “private collector from the Middle East”, without providing further details.
A marvel of nature
The previous record was held by a 25.59-carat Burmese ruby, sold by Sotheby’s in Geneva in 2015 for a total of $30.33 million, including fees.
“It’s a real wonder of nature. Any ruby that comes out of the ground and ends up exceeding five carats as a polished ruby is something rare. A 10-carat ruby is very rare. 20 carats is almost unheard of. A ruby over 50 carats is once-in-a-lifetime”, Quig Bruning, head of the jewelry department for the Americas at Sotheby’s, told AFP.
At the same auction, a rare pink diamond called “The Eternal Pink”, weighing 10.57 carats and extracted from a mine in Botswana, also sold for the same amount of $34.8 million. This set a per-carat record for a stone of this color ($3.29 million).
The current all-time record for the sale price of a pink diamond was set in Hong Kong in 2017, when the 59.60-carat “Pink Star” diamond was acquired for $71.2 million.
