The Swedish company Universum has published the 2023 edition of its ranking of the companies preferred by students and young executives. In addition to the strong positioning of luxury goods companies, the pleasant surprise is the renewed interest in French industrial groups.
Every year, the Swedish company Universum examines the companies preferred by students and young executives. The aim is to compare the image of companies with the reality on the ground. People from engineering schools (37%) and business and management schools (49%) are the most represented categories among those surveyed.
This new Universum ranking is thus divided into three sub-rankings, the first based on the responses of students and executives from the business and management sector (business category), the second on those from engineering students and executives (engineering category) and the third on those from IT students and executives (engineering category).
French executives in the business category continue to favor the luxury sector, with its dynamic market. LVMH has consistently topped the business ranking since 2020, closely followed by Hermès. The L’Oréal group has lost one place since last year, and now occupies the fifth step of the podium.
But the ranking of the most attractive companies for engineering and IT executives in France also shows their renewed interest in France’s major industrial companies. Airbus is now the most attractive company for engineering executives, ahead of Thales and EDF. Safran enters the top 5 in fifth place, up four places on 2022. Even in the ranking for IT executives, generally dominated by GAFAMs, Thales and Airbus move up to third and fifth place respectively, having been absent from the top 5 in the previous three rankings.
TotalÉnergies is also strengthening its appeal among executives. The energy group moved up 16 places in the business ranking (to 10th) and 14 places in the IT ranking (also to 10th).
“In the 2023 edition, we observe a phenomenon of transfer of attractiveness between industry and technology players among engineers, to the benefit of the first group”, summarizes Aurélie Robertet, Universum’s Director for France, for Les Echos Start.

The surprise of 2023 comes from Google, which ranked first among engineering executives between 2020 and 2022, and which falls to fourth place this year. Similarly, the Mountain View-based group drops to fourth place in the ranking of executives from business and management schools, whereas it was ranked second from 2020 to 2022. The company retains its leading position only among IT executives.
Google is not the only technology company to lose its appeal among executives. In the ranking for engineers, Apple falls five places, Microsoft drops two and Amazon loses no less than eleven!
This regression can be explained by the growing importance attached by executives to teleworking. According to the Universum survey, 39% of business executives questioned said they were “less interested” in a company that did not offer this flexibility. Like Amazon and Meta, Google is now particularly cautious when it comes to telecommuting. The search engine has updated its hybrid working policy, doubling the amount of face-to-face time.
Google’s head of human resources asserts that there is simply no effective substitute for physical meetings. In practice, employees will have to be present at least three days a week, and telecommuting is to become the exception once again, as she wrote in an internal memo.
