On Monday, the Belgian fashion designer announced on social media that he had made the decision to end his eponymous label.
“Words fail me to say how proud I am of all we have accomplished,” Raf Simons writes on Instagram. “Thank you all for believing in our vision and for believing in me“. It is with these beautiful digital words that the Belgian designer closes the doors of his House.
After working for big names like Jil Sander, Dior or Calvin Klein, Raf Simons had opened almost three decades ago his own Couture House. It is well known that, in addition to France, Belgium is the birthplace of great names in fashion: Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten, Raf Simons or Walter Van Beirendonck.
After 27 years of good and loyal service to the fashion industry, Raf Simons is bowing out. Via an Instagram post published yesterday, he revealed that the Spring/Summer 2023 collection, presented last October in London was the last of his brand, the final touch of his personal fashion footprint on the catwalks: “The Spring/Summer 2023 collection marks the conclusion of an extraordinary journey and the last season of the Raf Simons fashion brand“.
This concise and not very explicit message leaves room for many speculations. Some think it could be due to the problems of the fashion industry with the financial market. Others speculate that after 30 years as artistic director and co-creative director of Prada for almost three years, Raf Simons would like to devote himself fully to his responsibilities within the Italian label.
Other designers had done the same thing. In 2019, the American designer Zac Posen closed his label after 20 years of activity and in June 2020, the New York brand Sies Marjan announced its withdrawal from the fashion world due to the financial impact of the pandemic.
Belgium in the spotlight
Graduated of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Raf Simons quickly made a name for himself in this extraordinary and notoriously difficult world. He is notably known for putting Belgian fashion on the international map, by presenting a new modern aesthetic. He launched his eponymous brand in 1995, focusing on minimalism and simplicity, designing silhouettes that are both masculine and feminine.
Far from the fashion diktats of the time, he creates his own rules with his own desires without worrying about the looks of others. One of his innovative ideas? Bringing in people from the street to parade on the catwalk. An energy and line of conduct still present today. For his latest show, the Belgian designer brought in more than 1,000 guests, including fashion students, to give them a chance to be inspired and immerse themselves in this fascinating world.
Raf Simons will make history, like his Belgian predecessors before him. Hailed as one of the most famous designers of the modern era, he has influenced both men’s and women’s fashion. Even though he’s closing the doors of his House, he’s not done with the industry yet and plans to give it a few more scissor kicks.
