Money.co has ranked the most luxurious cities in the world, selected according to their restaurants, hotels and prestigious shops. Paris comes first, followed by London and Tokyo.
The reference site Money.co has determined a ranking of the most luxurious cities among 140 cities in the world. The criteria takes into account the number of five-star hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants and designer boutiques (from the top 10 luxury brands – Cartier, Rolex, Tiffany & Co, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Burberry, Valentino, Versace and Hermès) in each city.
The most luxurious lifestyle city for both residents and visitors remains Paris with a total of 427 Michelin-starred restaurants, 108 top 10 luxury designer shops and 95 five-star hotels. The City of Light is the ideal destination for a lavish getaway, with 24 Cartier boutiques (more than any other city) and more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city in the world.
Only two other European destinations make the top 20: London, ranked second, with more five-star accommodation than Paris (156) with references such as the Ritz, the Savoy and Shangri-La in the Shard. In contrast to Paris and London, which dominate the ranking, Madrid concludes it by finishing twentieth among the most luxurious cities in the world.
Heading internationally, third place goes to Tokyo, Japan, home to 298 award-winning restaurants, including Sukiyabashi Jiro Honten, run by the oldest living chef to receive three Michelin stars, Jirō Ono. New York follows closely behind the Land of the Rising Sun, coming in fourth place.
Asian cities then feature prominently in the ranking : Seoul in South Korea is fifth, Hong Kong and Shanghai in China are sixth and seventh and Singapore, renowned for its luxury architecture and design, is eighth. Bangkok and Pekin complete the top 10.
The Money.co.uk research team also ranked cities by luxury services offered per square kilometre (km²). This approach found that Paris once again tops the list, despite its size (105.4km2). In second place is Phuket, which has 48 Michelin-starred restaurants in its 12 square kilometres, followed by Brussels in third place, which has 42 luxury establishments in its 32.6 square kilometres.
In fourth place is Geneva, known for its many prestigious properties with 3.58 luxury locations per square kilometre. The French cities of Cannes and Lyon are fifth and sixth respectively in this second ranking by Money.co.uk.
