Paris: The initial project for the transformation of the Grand Palais reoriented

Roselyne Bachelot, the Minister of Culture, announced on Saturday, September 26, the abandonment of the initial project, with the profile of a less “pharaonic” and more ecological project. Renovation work is being undertaken instead, at a cost of 466 million euros.

The initial restoration project for the Grand Palais, a project conceived by the Local Architectures Network (LAN) architectural firm in 2013, was aimed at transforming the Grand Palais. This ambitious project aimed to turn the Grand Palais into a “culture machine“, and to welcome up to 4 million visitors a year, compared with just under 3 million today.

In a context of health and economic crisis, the project was finally redirected towards a more sober, more ecological site, in the face of “risks of financial abuses” linked to the health crisis, announced the Réunion des musées nationaux-Grand Palais and the Ministry of Culture.

The new project will focus on restoration rather than the transformation initially planned. “Today we must take greater account of ecological considerations, have larger circulation spaces, more Covid-compatible“, said a close associate of the Minister of Culture.

The Grand Palais, built in Paris for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, has been classified as a historic monument since November 2000, and has been home to the Palais de la Découverte since 1937, as well as the central nave, classified as a historic monument in 1975, and is also divided up by national galleries and restaurants.

The destruction is reduced to a minimum, and the project no longer requires digging under the nave or in the wooded, listed and protected green spaces located at the entrance to the monument,” says the Réunion des musées nationaux-Grand Palais. The renovations also planned to increase the nave’s capacity to accommodate up to 11 people.

This new restoration project will not change anything to the installation on the Champ-de-Mars of the ephemeral Grand Palais, built to host cultural events during the works, and the opening to the public is still scheduled for early 2021.

The Grand Palais is scheduled to reopen in 2024 to host the Olympic Games. The entire monument, including the Palais de la Découverte, will be inaugurated in the spring of 2025.

The director of the Cannes luxury hotel closed the doors of the Carlton on Monday, and this for the remainder of the year.

The rumor had already been running for several weeks in the Alpes-Maritimes region, but Giuseppe Vincelli, the director of the Carlton, confirmed the closing of the Cannes palace on Thursday, September 10. The hotel, which had already closed its doors in mid-March with the national lockdown, had only reopened at the beginning of August.

The Carlton has therefore been closed since September 28, 2020 and will only open again at the end of the year, on the occasion of the international luxury travel event, if it is well maintained.
