Orient Express, the Accor Group subsidiary it acquired in 2017, plans to order two sailboats from the Atlantic shipyards, with first delivery expected in 2026.

With the acquisition of the Orient Express, the Accor group has decided to revive this mythical train that travels between Istanbul and Paris. The world’s leading luxury hotel group is adding a new string to its bow by launching a prestige cruise line. The subsidiary will order two sailing ships from Chantiers de l’Atlantique that can carry up to 120 passengers, said its vice-president Guillaume de Saint Lager.

Orient Express has signed a letter of intent for the purchase of two ships. The first should be delivered within three years and the second during 2027. However, the group’s subsidiary has refused to reveal the financial amounts involved.

A green and sustainable boat

We have completely reworked and adapted the concept of Silenseas, a large cruising yacht designed by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire (Loire-Atlantique), to the ultraluxury,” said de Saint Lager. “In the world of cruising, it will be the greenest boat“, he assures.

The future three-masted hybrid sailboat, quieter and less polluting, will run on liquefied natural gas engines and 4,500 m2 of innovative sails, fixed on 100-meter high masts.

Named Orient Express Silenseas, the 220-meter-long ship will offer 54 suites, spread over four decks.  Known for his creations mixing classic and contemporary, the architect Maxime d’Angeac, already in charge of the interior design of the famous Orient Express train, will be in charge of the interior layout and decoration. For the exterior, the project has been entrusted to the naval architecture firm Stirling Design.

Regarding future destinations, Guillaume de Saint Lager remains evasive, mentioning only “the Mediterranean in summer and the Caribbean in winter“. Less polluting and therefore more ecological, these future boats, much smaller than the large cruise ships, will be able to venture into prestigious ports.

We are interested in everything that is a luxurious and sustainable means of transport“, says Guillaume de Saint Lager, who intends to make the Orient Express “a travel brand”.

After the re-launch of the mythical luxury train on European rails planned for 2025, the subsidiary of the Accor group also wants to launch Orient Express la Dolce Vita, another luxury train that will run on Italian rails from spring 2024. It will also open two hotels in Rome and Venice. A few days ago, the group announced its reorganization around two full-fledged divisions, namely Premium, Mid-range & Economy and Luxury & Lifestyle.
