Offered at auction by Sotheby’s, Dictador Generations En Lalique’s exceptional carafe was sold for GBP 30,000, a record sale for the British multinational.
In an online auction on Tuesday, March 2, Sotheby’s recorded a record bid for bottles of rum. Produced by the Colombian rum house Dictador and the French crystal house Lalique, this prodigious decanter was sold for £30,000, making it one of the most expensive bottles of rum ever sold at auction.
The purchaser thus obtains the precious lot, including the witness decanter, bearing the number #0 and hand-made by the Lalique crystal factory, founded in 1888. This frosted clear crystal bottle is a limited edition of only 300 pieces, designed by artistic director Marc Larminaux.
Inspired by the “mysterious and magical beauty” of the Caribbean Sea, the decanter is adorned with ripples and aquatic patterns and has been fashioned with Lalique’s secret to reflect light in a unique way.
This ethereal decanter, titled Dictador Generations En Lalique, contains a quintessential liquid from a blend of vintage rums produced in 1976. This famous nectar was aged in American oak and port barrels and concocted by master blender Hernán Parra and his father Dario for the Dictador house. From the city of Cartagena, Colombia, the father, and son of the Parra family have been distilling rum since 1913.
With notes of caramel, cocoa, roasted honey, and coffee, this sumptuous rum represents the first collaboration between Dictador and the French crystal maker Lalique and was sold in an exceptional box with a luminous display and letters written by Hernán Parra and Marc Larminaux.
This unique box also contains a print of the original digital rendering of the bottle signed by the designer, an invitation ticket for two to the Dictador Art Masters in Cartagena, as well as a print signed by the artist M-City, curator of the Dictador Art Masters.
All proceeds from the sale of this lot will be donated to Art Masters, a charity dedicated to the preservation of the Colombian jungle and the promotion of Street Art. The limited-edition Lalique decanter is available at Whisky.com for €14,900.
