The Swiss watchmaker Omega has made official its new watch called Speedmaster Super Racing. It pushes the limits of precision thanks to an innovative solution, the Spirate, which ensures that it never lags. A revolutionary technique that is promised to a bright future.

The great watchmaking brands are constantly trying to push back the limits of precision. And Omega is demonstrating this again.

Already in 2013, the Swiss brand launched the world’s first truly antimagnetic movement, a technique that resists magnetic fields affecting the precision of watches.

Ten years later, Omega is going one step further with the official launch on January 26 of its new Speedmaster, named Super Racing 07. With a diameter of 44.25 mm for a thickness of 14.9 mm, a refined design despite a complex system, the watch retains the identity of the Swiss brand. But the Speedmaster Super Racing is extraordinary in its ability to achieve a certified precision of only 0/+2 seconds per day…Which means it never lags or advances more than two seconds per day ! Amazing.

A revolutionary system

For comparison, Rolex had managed to obtain -2/+2 seconds in 2015, while the Official Swiss Chronometer Control (COSC) grants a certification below -4/+6 seconds. Omega’s secret ? A system called Spirate offering exceptional precision. “This is the first watch with Omega’s Spirate fine-tuning system. It pays homage to Omega’s 2013 magnetic resistance masterpiece, and lets its mechanism be seen through the sapphire crystal case back”, says the Swiss watchmaker.

This exceptional precision is made possible by a revolutionary component, the Si14 balance spring. This new silicon material allows Omega to adjust the rigidity of the balance spring’s attachment point by means of an eccentric adjustment mechanism located on the balance bridge. The silicon is very smooth and was chosen for its non-magnetic and rust-resistant properties.

“Each innovative balance spring is made from a silicon plate, manufactured using an in-house process called DRIE (Deep Reactive Ion Etching), says Omega. Thanks to this unique mechanism, we are now able to achieve a certified accuracy of only 0/+2 seconds per day.”

Sold in a black and yellow Speedmaster case, with a steel or recycled nylon bracelet, the new timepiece will be released this summer for a value of 12,500 euros.
