The leading specialist in the manufacture of metal accessories for the fashion and luxury sectors was acquired on Wednesday by the Swiss industrial group Oerlikon. This transaction further strengthens the expertise of Oerlikon, which is gradually establishing itself as a leader in the luxury market.
After a few months of waiting, it’s done. This Wednesday, Oerlikon finally concluded the acquisition of Riri, a leading supplier of metal accessories, including zippers, for the fashion and luxury goods sector. The signing of the agreement was announced on December 16. The amount of the transaction has been kept secret.
OC Oerlikon is a global innovation player for surface engineering, polymer processing and additive manufacturing. Headquartered in Pfäffikon, Switzerland, the group manages more than 12,100 employees at 205 locations in 37 countries. By 2022, it will have sales of 2.9 billion Swiss francs.
The Riri Group, based in Mendrisio, is a leading manufacturer of metal accessories. The group supplies the fashion and luxury sectors and has five distinctive brands: Riri, Cobrax, Cobrax Metal Hub, DMC and Amom.
Growth strategy
This transaction is a further strategic step that “strengthens Oerlikon’s presence in the luxury market and contributes to the creation of a leading platform in the field of luxury metal goods”, says a statement. This acquisition is in line with the development strategy of the Swiss industrial group. In 2021, Oerlikon acquired the French company Coeurdor, which specializes in coatings for belts and jewelry. This operation reinforces the diversification of the Swiss group in the luxury market and makes Oerlikon an important global platform for the creation of metal articles for this target.
“The combined expertise, cutting-edge technology and luxury market know-how make Oerlikon a market leader in this sector”, said Michael Suess, executive chairman of the group. “We look forward to partnering with our luxury customers and helping them move toward more sustainable practices.”
Under the terms of the agreement, Renato Usoni, Riri’s chief executive, will lead the Swiss company’s new luxury business unit. He will have the status of president of Oerlikon Luxury, while the Riri and Cobrax brands will remain. Riri will operate as a separate entity within the Surface Solutions division.
