At an auction hosted by Christie’s, NFT artworks by young artist FEWOCiOUS sold for $2.16 million, confirming the appeal of these blockchain-based pieces to art collectors.
Auction house Chritie’s conducted a sale on Wednesday of NFT artworks by transgender artist FEWOCiOUS, whose real name is Victor Langlois, just 18 years old. The pieces fetched over $2 million.
NFTs (literally non-fungible tokens, therefore non-interchangeable) are here designed to represent a unique copy of a work of art and serve as licenses to use a work of art. NFTs thus allow to verify the ownership of digital assets based on the blockchain.
For works of art, although they are accessible to everyone, only the buyer of the NFT work has official ownership status. This is also true for images, videos or even text, whose NFT digital certificate allows them to be sold at sometimes exorbitant prices.
“I think NFTs are the future,” said Victor Langlois, who said he also owns crypto-currencies. “If you’re displaying your art and sharing it with the world digitally, offering a way for collectors to own it as a digital asset is just the next step.”
It was at Christie’s online auction, “Hello, I’m Victor (FEWOCiOUS) and This Is My Life,” that the auction house sold five lots by the artist for $2.16 million.
Transgender artist Victor Langlois becomes at 18 the youngest artist ever to do at auction by Christie’s. Each of the five lots includes a piece of video art sold as an NFT, drawings and diary entries from the artist’s diary for the corresponding year, sold in both physical and NFT form, and a physical painting.
The auction was well attended and the five lots attracted more than 20 bidders. Each of the lots represents a year in the life of Victor Langlois, who was born female in Seattle ; the artist discovered his gender identity at age 14 and began a sex change transition until he was 18.
“I feel like a lot of times transgender voices aren’t heard or respected, so having my platform to say, “Hey, look, this is my life and look at what we’re doing,” means a lot,” Victor Langlois said in an interview.
This sale of NFTs is in keeping with the growing popularity of NFTs in the art market. It also reflects Christie’s desire to diversify its activities and to organize auctions other than traditional art sales.
