The French haute-couture house Mugler unveils the second part of its spring-summer 2021 collection in an off-calendar show, where a wind of modernity and inclusiveness blew for the occasion.
Mugler‘s designer and artistic director Casey Cadwallader presented his spring-summer 2021 collection this Wednesday, March 31, in an off-calendar show, as did Stella McCartney and Kenzo. With the absence of physical shows in these times of health crisis, many houses have decided not to follow the classic calendar of Fashion Week but rather to make presentation campaigns for their collections.
For the occasion, a choice cast was assembled, including model-star Bella Hadid who opened the show accompanied by her understudy, performing impressive stunts, Irina Shayk who dominates the catwalk backward, before falling, dragging the camera in her fall. The cast also included model-actress Hunter Schafer, propelled to the forefront of the fashion scene since her role in the HBO series, Euphoria, who received a bucket of water on the head.
“I wanted a show that was a little bit surreal that went crazy. For people to be like, ‘What? Does she jump out of a box? She’s walking backward! Oh and the look is cool!”, rather than “Oh yeah, Mugler was pretty”,” details designer Casey Cadwallader. “People expect drama from Mugler, exciting clothes that don’t follow the rules.”
Mugler‘s latest collection is then in line with the times, marked by contemporaneity and diversity, and also wants to be accessible. Indeed, Casey Cadwallader has integrated into the collection an affordable clothing line, composed of T-shirts as well as lycra and denim pieces.
“I’ve always wanted to bring dance to the runway, but when it comes to making it live performance, it’s risky. Runway shows can be intense and scary,” the designer confides in an interview with Vogue. “It allows us to mess around, to play.”
The year 2021 promises to be a busy one for the house of Mugler, which will launch its first eau de toilette in September, in collaboration with French luxury giant L’Oreal. In the same period, the French haute-couture brand will present its new collection and will inaugurate the exhibition tracing the history of the house, Couturissime. In any case, Casey Cadwallader intends to contribute to this revival that is affecting the fashion world and that has been trying to shake up the pre-existing and dating rules of the sector for over a year now.
“Fashion is learning that it must also express itself through those who embody it. Seeing people laughing, jumping, falling, doing stunts, it’s not the same as watching models walk without smiling“, concludes Casey Cadwallader.
