Explora Journeys, MSC Croisières’ new luxury line just launched on May 30, will have six luxury ships by 2028, two of which will be hydrogenpowered.
Originally planned to be just four, Explora Journeys and Italian shipyard Fincantieri have announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to build two new hydrogen-powered luxury liners, bringing the brand’s total number of ships to six. For this project, MSC Croisières has invested €3.5 billion, of which €120 million has been added for these two new ships.
While the Explora I, II, III and IV ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the Explora V and VI will be equipped with “a new generation of engines running on liquefied natural gas, a solution to the problem of methane spillage” as well as a “liquid hydrogen containment system,” the group said later.
Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the MSC Group’s cruise division, said: “This announcement marks another important step in our goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 across the cruise operations of our 2 companies and is further evidence of our commitment to invest in the most advanced marine environmental technologies to develop sustainable solutions for the future.”
When these ships are docked with engines off, the hydrogen will power a 6-megawatt fuel cell producing clean energy for hotel services and allowing the ships to operate emission-free while docked.
Hydrogen is a clean energy that produces only water as a waste product. However, its production is polluting. However, hydrogen remains an efficient alternative with a lower ecological impact.
These two new ships will be commissioned in 2027 and 2028 respectively, while Explora Journeys will set sail for the first time in 2023.
