At the Met Gala, US Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez caused a stir by appearing in a dress urging a “tax on the rich”.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala took place on Monday 13 September, back this year after a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This great charity event is still hosted by the famous and inescapable editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The theme of this year’s event was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”.
This was the first time that US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez walked the red carpet of the ultra-modern US event. She appeared in a long white dress with the message “tax the rich” by designer Aurora James, founder of the brand Brother Vellies.

“When Aurora and I were first paired up, we really started having a conversation about what it means to be working-class women of colour at the Met, and we said, ‘We can’t just play the game, but we have to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview with James during the ceremony.

She also emphasised that this was a way of raising the alarm about justice and fairness in the US system, so that a debate could be opened on the issue.
Her message is clear and echoes one of the slogans of the presidential campaign of the current President of the United States, Joe Biden.
Other guests were also able to draw attention to themselves through their attire: this was the case for New York Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney. She showed up in a flashy dress with a political message of “Equal Rights for Women” and then carrying a purse supporting the Equal Rights Amendment.
