Luxury giant LVMH announced Monday to AFP a “historic” seizure of more than a million bottles of counterfeit perfumes in Greece, destined for the local market, while the group spent 43 million euros last year to fight against the copying of its products.

This is a historic seizure: we usually have warehouses and storage facilities, but what is new here is that we also have the production centre,” said Laurent Marcadier, the group’s director of asset and people protection.

He describes “a real manufacturing place, a fake perfume factory with workers, machines, empty bottles, pumps, +packaging+, labels, everything to assemble a perfume bottle“.

A “large part” of the 1.179 million bottles seized during the operation were counterfeits of the LVMH group’s main perfume brands, including Guerlain, Dior and Kenzo.

According to a statement by Greek authorities on Sunday, the searches were carried out in Heraklion, Crete, and seven people were arrested, “members of a criminal organization specializing in the illegal manufacture and sale of counterfeit products in tourist shops throughout the country”.

Laurent Marcadier said that “the investigators, from a Greek directorate specialising in organised crime, searched several places: manufacturing and storage sites, as well as the principal’s home, and on this occasion they found 500,000 other counterfeit articles, including bags and sunglasses, which they did not manufacture but imported“.

At the time of the arrest, one million bottles were ready to be marketed. This is a first. We have already had large seizures in the watchmaking industry, but to exceed one million in Europe is very rare,” says the official, who also indicates that 600,000 euros in cash were seized.

LVMH has set up customs cooperation with various countries around the world, particularly those affected by the production, import or sale of counterfeit products.

In 2019, the fight against counterfeiting cost the Bernard Arnault group 43 million euros in internal and external expenditure, a scourge which “can have an immediate adverse effect on sales and earnings, and progressively harm the brand image of the products concerned and consumer confidence“, according to the LVMH reference document.
