Luxury watchmaking: the new Royal Oak in platinum and green smoked dial from Audemars Piguet

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

This year, Audemars Piguet is revisiting the iconic Royal Oak Jumbo in a platinum version, still in 39 mm, associated with a sunny smoked green dial. This model is available in a limited edition of 100 pieces reserved for AP Houses.

This new platinum reference -15202PT- unveils a case similar to the steel or gold version. The same goes for the extra-flat mechanical movement and the diameter. However, the emblematic “Petite Tapisserie” dial of the model is absent from this revisited version. A significant change …

The case and the bracelet are in platinum.

The 8 hexagonal screws of the octagonal bezel are made of white gold and the “falling” bracelet is just right for the case. A perfect assembly of links and decreasing intermediate studs characterises the collection in a unique way.

Among its other qualities? Water resistance to 50 metres and a beating rhythm similar to the original model. The extra-thin mechanical self-winding movement, calibre 2121 with date window, is only 3.05 mm thick.

Thanks to 247 components, the mechanical movement has a standard power reserve of 40 hours at a frequency of 19,800 vibrations per hour (2.75 Hz). The monobloc oscillating weight, made entirely of 22-carat gold, is stamped “AP Audemars Piguet” in relief.

The “Petite Tapisserie” motif still adorns the outer segment.

An unusual and timeless watch

Designed by Gérald Genta for Audemars Piguet and presented at the Basel exhibition in the spring of 1972, the watch features a sublime extra-flat mechanical movement (Jaeger base) in a steel case at the price of a gold watch.

It was not an immediate success as the 39mm watch was considered to be out of the ordinary for small watches, which were in fashion at the time.

With more than 40 years of existence, the Royal Oak has become a true icon of the house of Audemars Piguet but also of modern watchmaking. Indeed, this prestigious sports watch is omnipresent in the history of the watchmaking house and represents one of the most desired luxury watches on the market.

It is the jewel of some collectors such as businessmen like the famous Giovanni Agnelli, emblematic boss of Fiat, or other figures of the international jet set.
