Etihad Rail, the United Arab Emirates’ rail operator, and the Italian luxury hotel company Arsenale signed an agreement last week to create a luxury rail network in the country. This project is part of a dynamic development of the rail network in all the Gulf countries.

Luxury tourism in the United Arab Emirates is growing at a rapid pace. The country’s rail operator, Etihad Rail, and the Italian luxury hotel company Arsenale signed an agreement last Tuesday at the Middle East Rail conference in Abu Dhabi to establish a luxury rail service.

The train is expected to cross the United Arab Emirates from Fujairah in the east to the historic Liwa Desert in Abu Dhabi. It will consist of 15 luxury cars, which are currently being fitted out in Puglia and Sicily, said a representative of Arsenale. For now, no launch date has been revealed.

More details are expected in the coming months, but Arsenale said the carriages will reflect Emirati heritage, while “production, craftsmanship, quality of on-board services, interior design and craftsmanship will be Italian, and the signature made in Italy.”

“By establishing a luxury train experience, we are introducing a unique world-class offering to the region and helping to boost the UAE tourism sector. In addition, we will be able to showcase the country’s diverse heritage and beauty to visitors from around the world”, said Shadi Malak, CEO of Eithad Rail.

Extended network

The network was officially inaugurated in February this year, with a freight service now operational. Work on the passenger service, which is the next step, is progressing rapidly.

This project is part of the development of the rail network in the oil-exporting country. By 2025, a total network of about 1,200 kilometers of rail is expected to be operational in the United Arab Emirates.

It is also envisaged that the UAE service will be extended to other Gulf countries. This would be Arsenale’s second international luxury train project after the recent announcement of The Dream of the Desert project in Saudi Arabia.
