The French remain the foreign clients who invest the most in luxury real estate in Portugal, and particularly in Lisbon, according to a recent survey on the sector.
Engel & Völkers, a German multinational specialized in luxury real estate, revealed through a recent survey that 35% of investments in the city of Lisbon were made by foreigners. Among them are 21% of French clients.
In this survey, we also learn that the largest markets for luxury real estate in Lisbon after the French are the British (18%), Brazilians (18%), Germans (9%) and Chinese (7%). The French thus remain in first place, which they have held for many years now.
However, each foreign investor has a favorite neighborhood in which to invest in Lisbon.
In 2020, the majority of French investments were in properties overlooking the Tagus River, especially in the Estrela, Belém, Santa Maria Maior and Misericórdia neighborhoods. In these areas, a property can reach €9,000 per m2. For British and German investors, there is a penchant for properties in Lisbon’s more historic areas.
However, prices remain moderate overall for acquiring a luxury villa in Lisbon, unlike other major European cities which do not hesitate to inflate their prices when an investment trend is felt. In addition, the incentives offered by the government allow foreign investors to benefit from numerous advantages as well as an upward potential.
Foreign investment in Portugal represents an important part of the real estate market in Portugal, accounting for approximately 15% of the sector.
