After the acquisition of Cowley Manor in the Cotswolds in the UK last May, the Experimental group of companies, owner of cocktail and wine bars, restaurants and hotels, has announced the purchase of two luxury hotels in Biarritz: Le Regina and Le Garage.
Notably famous for having introduced the cocktail bar culture to Paris around 2015, Experimental is pursuing its strategy of establishing itself across France and four other European countries (England, Spain, Switzerland, Italy).
With this in mind, the latter has just acquired two luxury hotels overlooking the Miramar beach in Biarritz: Le Regina and Le Garage; formerly owned by the Neris group.
“I am very happy to have, since 2014, renovated and led with the whole team Le Regina for its second life and led the renovation project of Le Garage. It is with pleasure and a certain emotion that I hand over to the Experimental group to give a new impetus to these establishments which, I am convinced, will be successful” , underlines the CEO of Neris, Thierry Minsé.
For his part, Olivier Bon, co-founder of Experimental Group, says he is “delighted to have found not one, but two iconic properties in Biarritz to be part of our portfolio. We’ve been looking for the right address in the area for years to create our style of hospitality and welcome our regular guests, many of whom are frequent visitors to the city.”
Two legendary and atypical addresses
A historic hotel on the Atlantic coast, Le Regina Hôtel & Spa was founded in 1907, and has since become an iconic address in Biarritz. In a Belle Époque style, Le Regina houses 72 rooms, a restaurant, a bar, as well as a spa with an outdoor swimming pool; and offers over the lot a breathtaking view of the Biarritz lighthouse.
The second nugget on the West Coast, Le Garage was originally a classic car garage that became a boutique hotel in 2021. More family-oriented than its predecessor, it has 27 rooms, each with its own unique and atypical architecture, including several suites with private terraces and a pool.
Tourism back in force in France
As we told you a month ago, tourists have finally made their comeback on French soil, after two years impacted by the Covid-19.
The tourism sector, the first victim of the pandemic, is slowly recovering, as restrictions in countries around the world are being lifted. The major hotel groups have already noticed this in May 2022. Marriott CEO Tony Capuano told CNBC that at the hotels the group owns (JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis), revenue per room soared by 30% in the first quarter of 2022, compared to data for the same period in 2019.
The French tourism market also seems to have a bright future ahead of it since the return of spring. Although not yet at the same level as in 2019, bookings are showing a real upward trend. The hotel occupancy rate in France for the month of April was 63.7%, which is still 8.3% lower than in April 2019.
However, the hotel occupancy rate on the Atlantic coast of France stood at 91.8% in May 2022. This information should delight Experimental and confirm the group’s decision to choose the West Coast and the flagship city of Biarritz as a location for its new operations in France.
