Both luxury carmakers have exceeded their expectations, reaching record sales for the year 2022.

Despite inflation, rising raw material costs, and delayed deliveries, the luxury auto sector ended 2022 on a very positive note. Sales figures for the year that is ending are even better than those of 2021. That year was already a good one. Both Bugatti and Rolls-Royce announced that they had achieved new sales records in 2022, announcing that 2023 was also shaping up very well.

Bugatti, known for its high-luxury hypersports cars, is one of the smaller automakers. Its track record, compared to others, may seem minimal at first glance. In 2022, it delivered 80 cars, which is exactly the number it planned at the beginning of the year. Part of the reason for the production run, which is no more than 100 vehicles, is that each car is handcrafted as a limited edition, with a price tag approaching six figures. For what was long considered a pioneering company in the field of luxury cars, the price justifies the means. As its founder, Ettore Bugatti, once said: “Nothing is too good, nothing is too expensive.”

The 80 cars delivered include the 400th Chiron model, the last nine units of the Chiron super sport 300+ and the planned 10 units of the Centodieci. The company points out that this number is a record for the Molsheim plant, which opened in France in 2005.

Even if the 2022 goals have been reached, Bugatti still has a lot of work to do. It has to build the last models of the Chiron as well as 99 examples of the Mistral and 40 of the track car called simply Bolide. For the time being, the company has no more cars to sell, so it has to start building new vehicles again, for this new year. Bugatti-Rimac CEO Mate Rimac said he would release more details about the company’s future in the second half of 2023.

Across the Channel, celebrity-favorite automaker Rolls-Royce delivered exactly 6,021 cars in 2022, an 8 % increase over 2021. The company adds that the models reached customers in 50 different countries. Demand for customized cars reached a record high in 2022, and the average selling price of this gem of an automobile now stands at around 500,000 euros (or $537,000)

Despite delivering its latest vehicles to every corner of the world, the United States remains its largest market, with sales increasing in 2022. In China, on the other hand, sales have declined due to government restrictions. On the European side, sales also increased in 2022, despite the war in Ukraine. Germany and the UK are among the most buoyant countries.

The Cullinan emerged as the best-selling Rolls-Royce in 2022, followed by the Black Badge models.

With a year where all the lights are green, Rolls-Royce wants to keep the momentum going and is planning big things for 2023. It will expand its Goodwood, England, plant and hopes to increase its ability to configure and manufacture custom cars. In addition, the British company will begin building its first ever electric car: Spectre.
