Thierry Bolloré, boss of Jaguar Land Rover unveiled this Monday his recovery plan called “Reimagine”, a “reinvention of sustainable modern luxury” thus presenting the objective to become a zero carbon society by 2039 by being 100% electric by 2025.
The British top-of-the-range manufacturer, which belongs to the Tata Motors, plans to invest 2.5 billion pounds per annum for electrification technologies and the development of connected vehicle services in order to carry out its new green strategy.
The company also said it was investing in the development of fuel cells in anticipation of a future shift to hydrogen to power vehicles. Prototypes will therefore be using clean hydrogen fuel cells on UK roads in the coming year.
“By 2030, in addition to the all-electric Jaguar range, the aim is for 60% of Land Rover models sold to be equipped with zero-emission powertrains,” the group announced.
The car manufacturer plans to launch the electronic models of its entire range by 2030, including six purely electric Land Rover models over the next five years. The first of these is planned for 2024.
Indeed, Land Rover will not undergo as complete a transformation as Jaguar and is targeting 60% of sales in electric vehicles by 2030.
“Over the next five years, Land Rover will welcome six all-electric models to reinforce its position as the world leader in luxury SUVs through its three families, Range Rover, Discovery and Defender,” the group said in a press release.
Currently, the brand has only one electric vehicle, the I-Pace SUV, and the boss spoke of “a new portfolio of models of spectacular beauty and design at the forefront of new generation technologies”.
On the other hand, the group decided not to build the new XJ, a surprising choice since the flagship model was planned with an electric motor.
“As Jaguar seeks to realise its unique potential, the model that was to replace the Jaguar XJ will not be part of the new portfolio (the name could be reused)”, according to the release.
Jaguar Land Rover has also specified that with this strategy, its transformation will lead to a significant reduction in its non production activities in the UK. The brand has stated that it will keep its three British factories open for the electrification of its range. The Solihull plant will also house Jaguar’s 100% electric platform.
