At the beginning of 2021, the luxury goods industry seems to be feeling the effects of the economic crisis less and less and is carrying the financial markets considerably.
If the threat of the virus still hangs over the stock markets and prevents them from regaining total serenity despite the fact that their year 2020 ends better than one would have thought, the luxury sector seems to have recovered very quickly from the health crisis.
Two luxury goods stocks appear to be immune to the Covid crisis : Hermès continued its momentum by posting the best annual performance in the CAC 40 with a 32% gain. This morning the luxury giant posted a 0.51% increase to 888.60 euros at the opening. For its part, LVMH posted a significant increase of 23.4% and started this morning with +0.89% to 516.20 euros.
Kering is far behind them with an increase of only 1.6%, but the important point is that the large group does not end with a fall in view of the considerable slowdown in its sales, including those of Gucci. Kering started the day at +1.19% for 598.50 euros. However, at mid-session it posted the biggest drop in the CAC 40 with a 1.21% drop to 587.20 euros.
It should be noted that the Paris Stock Exchange nevertheless began the year by opening its first session of the year upwards on Monday (+1.12%).
More generally, the stock exchanges did well for most of the year and appear to have adapted to the economic crisis in a sustainable manner, despite significant declines compared to previous years.
If over the whole of last year, the CAC lost -6.4%, i.e. its worst score since 2018 (-11%), it should be noted that it ended the year in a very positive way with a fall from 0.86 to 5551.41 points. However, this score is well below the MSCI World Index, which gained more than 13% this year, the Nasdaq score, which rose by 43.5%, and the Nasdaq-100 score, which rose to 47.5%. For its part, Wall Street also ended the year on a high note until its last session, with the Dow Jones gaining 0.65% to 30,606.48 points and the Nasdaq Composite 0.14% to 12,888.28 points.
To see which paths the financial markets will follow in 2021 with the vaccination campaigns for the virus, the appearance of a new mutation of the virus, the restrictions that are being tightened in each of the countries, etc…
