It measures 82.2 x 42.8 x 34.2 mm and is described by experts as a high quality type IIa white gem. This diamond is the fourth of the mine’s most impressive discoveries since 2015. It is also named the seventh largest diamond ever discovered and one of the five largest colorless diamonds of all time, according to the Natural Diamond Council.
“Lucara is extremely pleased to announce the recovery of another large, high-quality diamond,” the company’s CEO Eira Thomas said in a statement. As we make progress in the deeper extraction of the open pit and move to underground mining, exclusively in the southern lobe, the preponderance of large, high-value stones increases, in line with the resource model“.
Founded in 2009 by two Canadian mining leaders, Lucara Diamond is a master at making exceptional discoveries. It produces some of the biggest diamonds of all time. Nearly half of the top ten gems were found at the South African mining site. By comparison, the closest diamond to the new 1080-carat rock is 1109 Lesedi La Rona, found at the Karowe mine in 2015. We can also mention the Sewelô of 11758 carats found in 2019, as well as a diamond of 1174 carats.
Lucara Diamond: expert in the quest for big diamonds
The discovery and excavation of diamonds has improved over the years. This large 1080 carat type IIa rock ranks among only 1 to 2% of rare diamond types. These gems are known to have no measurable nitrogen or boron impurity (chemical element), are often colorless and of very high quality. Experts say that there may be more of this size, but they are often broken into smaller pieces during the recovery process.
Over time, improvements in the technology used for excavations have changed. Lucara Diamond’s latest discovery was recovered by the XRT unit, an X-ray technology designed to prevent stones from breaking during extraction.
More than a market, in Botswana the diamond has become a real economy, which makes the country live and helps the inhabitants. Diamonds were first discovered in southern Africa in the 1950s.
From 1960 to 1980, the country had the fastest growing economy in the world, mainly through mining. Botswana is the world’s second-largest diamond producer behind Russia and ahead of Canada and Australia, and now has the highest GDP per capita in continental Africa. Diamond mining accounts for 40% of its GSP and 90% of its exports.
The inhabitants benefit from these natural diamond recoveries in a unique way. Every child in Botswana has a guaranteed free primary and secondary education, and contributions to environmental protection help preserve its wildlife.
The sale of the new diamond could contribute to the further development of the country.
