The new Louis Vuitton Spring-Summer collection for men, designed by the artistic director of the men’s branch of the house, Virgil Abloh, will be unveiled this Thursday 24 June at 2.30pm.

For this collection, Virgil Abloh tried to rework the basics of fashion. Far from being classic, this collection brings together a new feminised version of formal wear and rave outfits.

A mix of chess, kung fu and gender

Between jackets made from a patchwork of flyers, others cut with pointed shoulders accompanied by belts pierced with colourful pinhooks and blue tracksuits with leather details; Abloh may surprise many when discovering this new collection.

I’m always working in polar opposites and I’m always interacting with the formality of Louis Vuitton and the contemporaneity of today’s youth culture – almost like a generation discovering luxury again, and I’m the conduit” , the designer told WWD while filming his collection.

So these polar opposites are the suit and the track suit. I was thinking about that: the day job and the night job, the raver and the businessman. I don’t choose between one or the other. My signature is both” , he continued.

Called “Amen Break“, the film presenting his collection required the presence of a large number of guests. Indeed, it features musicians GZA, Goldie, Saul Williams, Lupe Fiasco and Shabaka Hutchings. These artists were obviously not chosen at random by Abloh, as they were all asked to celebrate the creative talents of people of colour.

The opening song of the film is a new song by Goldie (who also appears in the film) called “Dassai Menace“, mixing martial arts and chess references. Indeed, the latter was based on “Lone Wolf and Cub“, a Japanese kung-fu film.

Between a birch forest, a replica of a dojo and chess, the whole is a reference to the cover of GZA‘s “Liquid Swords” album as well as Louis Vuitton’s characteristic Damier motif. This is also the case for the future creations in the collection, such as this case embodying the iconic Damier pattern.

Several previews of what Abloh would present for this collection were revealed on Louis Vuitton‘s media, where several inspirations from the world of chess and the Asian world can be seen.
